Even so, I think the retailer has just outdone itself once and for all. The mini bucket announced on social media a few months ago is finally here, and it costs just 99 cents.

Yet, anticipation and accessibility (and, well, in-store-only availability) are only part of the potential for a frenzy. Harbor Freight knows exactly what it’s doing with the release.

Mini buckets have become their own micro-trend. Lowe’s, Home Depot, Menard’s, Ace Hardware and other suppliers have all released branded versions of their own, and it’s caused hordes of passionate collectors to take notice.

What’s more, the Harbor Freight mini builds on the notoriety of its distinctive red full-size counterpart. The regularity of the retailer’s free bucket promotion has meant that it too commands a sort of cult-like following, both for its practicality and its internet popularity.

Ultimately, though, I have a feeling it’ll catch on most of all because, well, it does promise some genuine functional benefit.

Made from food-safe polypropylene and snapped shut with a lid, it invites storage of everything from small parts and hardware to drinks and snacks (though maybe try to keep such contents separate).

Much as I try not to cave to the hype, I’ll probably pick up a mini bucket when if I next see one in-store. It’ll look right at home next to my US General toolbox.

Word online has it that Harbor Freight’s Mini Bucket is shipping out to locations around the country now. You can pick it up in-store for 99 cents.
