An Oregon woman left a scathing one-star review of Manzanita Coffee Co.after she claimed that she and her 'service dog' were treated unfairly. The business has since shared a telling image.
An Oregon woman threw a huge fit after she was told to get her dog's paws off a counter at a local coffee shop – but the business had the last laugh.
A woman, identified only as Haley, left a scathing review of Manzanita Coffee Co on Sunday after claiming she and her 'service animal' weren't treated fairly.
The irate customer said that a female employee 'with brown hair rudely told me that my dog needs to wait outside.'
'I told her that I would not do so, because it’s a service animal, and she said I can’t be inside,' Haley wrote in the Google review, adding that she demanded a refund and was granted one after the two of them 'argued back and forth.'
'Don’t waste your money here - I walked to the hotel a few steps away and got a high-quality coffee with a smile there and no issues,' Haley, who gave a one-star review of the shop, concluded.
Within hours, the coffee shop personally responded to Haley's review alongside an image of her dog jumping up on the counter.
The owners had originally intended to respond to her on Google, but were unable to include the picture, so they posted it on Facebook 'so our local customers could see the other side of the story,' the shop told the Daily Mail.
'We rarely respond to reviews such as this but it is such a deeply inaccurate characterization of the actual interaction that we are compelled to respond,' the business wrote before sharing their version of events.
'Only after your dog jumped up on the counter, placing its front paws on the surface, from which we serve food and drink to our customers, did we advise you that pets are not allowed in the shop. At no time did you state your dog was a service animal; you actually asked, "How do you know it's not a service animal?"' the company said, before applauding how its employee dealt with the situation.
A female customer who brought her dog inside Manzanita Coffee Co in Oregon slammed the business after she and her 'service dog' were allegedly treated poorly
The customer, who only identified herself as Haley in her scathing Google review, claimed an employee told her and her dog to wait outside when she visited the shop recently. She also gave the business a one-star review
'The clear response would have been, “Based on its untrained behavior.” But our team member did not say this. She instead offered proper service to you and offered to deliver your latte to you outside, which you twice refused. You asked for a refund and promptly received one. We’re happy to share the video of the interaction with you, should you like to refresh your memory.
'In the meantime, we’re delighted you got a great coffee in our sweet town. We have fantastic shop owners up and down Laneda,' the response continued.
The coffee shop's Facebook post prompted a flurry of responses from locals and people from out of state who have visited the business.
A majority of people praised the shop for how they handled the situation and said the picture was 'proof' that the pup was not a service dog.
One wrote: 'I love this! Not the complaint, but the visual proof!'
Another person agreed and added: 'True. The proof is if it were a service dog, it wouldn't be on the counter. They are trained much better then [sic] that.'
'A picture is worth a thousand words,' someone else commented.
The local shop (pictured) posted Haley's review and their response - something they said they don't typically do
'I love Manzanita Coffee. And thank you. Service dogs don't put their paws up on counters! Tell your employee she handled this correctly,' wrote another.
A user made it clear that one bad review was not going to make her stop supporting the business.
They wrote: 'One oddly slanted review won’t stop me from driving down for a cup.'
The situation itself sparked a larger conversation about service animals, and dogs generally, being allowed inside businesses.
Several people questioned how the dog could be a service animal without an identifiable vest on, and that no trained dog would jump up as that one did.
'A service dog should have some kind of harness or vest on. And like a lot of people are saying, they do not jump on anything like a counter,' a user shared.
Someone else chimed in: 'It's amazing how some people think their dog is welcome in every shop they go into.'
Although the post took off online, the shop said they 'never dreamed' it would have and that they are 'deeply grateful for the support team and our little shop has received.'
In a Facebook post just hours after Haley's review, the shop shared that the dog's paws were on the counter while the woman interacted with the staffer. They also provided an image that proved their point
'We're a small coffee shop in a very small town, and we thought we were talking to our own community. Our intention was to address what we felt was an unfair and inaccurate review and to stand up for our employee.'
'We were addressing the review, not the reviewer. We certainly don't want to put a target on anyone’s back.'
State law prohibits all animals, except for service animals, inside grocery stores, restaurants, and food establishments.
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), service animals are trained to perform tasks for people with disabilities.
Therapy animals that provide comfort and emotional support do not qualify as service dogs under the ADA, even if a doctor's note says otherwise.
Furthermore, service dogs should remain on the floor or be carried, per the Oregon Department of Agriculture.
