Sony have just introduced a new mic that allows content creators to capture, edit and export spatial audio from their mobile phone. The ECM-AX10 is the first smartphone mic in the world to gain Eclipsa Audio certification, and promises to capture a sound that feels more natural, immersive and true to the moment.

The ECM-AX10 houses a set of four omnidirectional capsules, and employs Sony’s spatial audio processing to recreate a sense of space, direction and distance that can make video content feel more engaging and immersive. It mounts directly to a phone and connects via USB-C, and offers a choice of three recording modes:

  • Ambisonics: Works with the company’s Spatial Audio Video Tool app to support publishing in Eclipsa Audio for an immersive audio experience on YouTube.
  • Binaural: Uses Sony's proprietary spatial audio technology (also used for 360 Reality Audio) to create a headphone-optimised three-dimensional sound experience even where Eclipsa Audio is not supported.
  • Stereo: Offers a standard, versatile format for headphones and speakers. The microphone can also be used with general recording and video apps as well as Sony's dedicated apps.

Although the mic will work with any mobile recording apps, when paired with Sony’s own Spatial Audio Video Tool app it forms part of an all-in-one mobile solution that covers capture, editing and delivery of spatial audio content.

Key Features
  • Spatial audio for smartphone video, with a newly developed spherical module of four omnidirectional capsules that capture sound from every direction. Weighs only around 24g.
  • Three recording modes: Ambisonics for spatial audio production and publishing in Eclipsa Audio on YouTube; binaural for a 3D headphone experience using Sony's 360 Reality Audio technology; and stereo for everyday videos and social content.
  • A complete phone-based workflow with Sony's Spatial Audio Video Tool app — creators can shoot, review, make quick edits and export with spatial audio, all from their smartphone.
  • Flexible compatibility: works with general recording and video apps as well as Sony's own dedicated apps.
  • Developed and fine-tuned by engineers at Sony PCL.
Pricing & Availability

The ECM-AX10 is available to pre-order now, priced at $249.99. Shipping is expected to commence later in October 2026.
