Amazon's expanded Prime settlement covers millions more U.S. subscribers, with automatic refunds and potential additional payments through April 2027.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has expanded its $2.5 billion settlement with Amazon, making millions of additional U.S. Prime subscribers eligible for automatic refunds of up to $200 in total. The revised program extends payments to customers previously excluded under the original terms, with further distributions possible through April 2027.
The FTC announced the changes in September 2026 after a federal court approved a revised settlement order. By that month, Amazon had already issued more than $845 million in consumer refunds. The original September 2025 settlement required Amazon to provide up to $1.5 billion in consumer redress and pay a separate $1 billion civil penalty over allegations involving deceptive Prime enrollment and cancellation practices.
Who Qualifies for the Amazon Prime Refund?According to the FTC's official refund guidance, customers must meet all three requirements to qualify:
The challenged enrollment processes include Amazon's Universal Prime Decision Page, Shipping Option Select Page, Single Page Checkout and Prime Video enrollment flow. The original settlement covered qualifying customers who used fewer than 10 Prime benefits during one year. The revised order extends automatic payments to millions of additional customers who used between 11 and 20 benefits during that period.
How Much Can Eligible Customers Receive? The revised settlement increases the maximum total refund from $51 to $200 per eligible customer. Under the revised terms, Amazon must issue supplemental payments of up to $149 to previous refund recipients who accepted their payments if the total amount accepted by consumers doesn't reach the required settlement threshold by February 2027, which could bring an eligible customer's total refund to $200.
Amazon was scheduled to begin the expanded round of automatic payments on Oct. 1, 2026, through PayPal, Venmo or a mailed check.
The revised payment schedule includes three key dates:
Consumers don't need to file a claim, respond to a notice or complete additional paperwork to receive automatic payments. However, payments expire 60 days after their issue date. Recipients should accept electronic transfers or cash their checks within that period.
Customers who need assistance with their payments can contact Amazon's settlement administrator at admin@SubscriptionMembershipSettlement.com or call 1-888-999-8094, according to the FTC.
FTC Expands Refunds, Amazon Denies Wrongdoing"The revised order will ensure more consumers who were harmed by Amazon's deceptive enrollment and cancellation practices benefit from the FTC's historic settlement," said Christopher Mufarrige, Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection.
The case stems from FTC allegations that Amazon used deceptive website designs, commonly known as dark patterns, to enroll consumers in paid Prime subscriptions without their consent and made cancellation unnecessarily difficult.
Amazon disputed wrongdoing in its response to the original settlement. In a statement issued in September 2025, the company said, "Amazon and our executives have always followed the law and this settlement allows us to move forward and focus on innovating for customers. We work incredibly hard to make it clear and simple for customers to both sign up or cancel their Prime membership."
The FTC has warned that it is not contacting consumers directly about refunds related to the Amazon settlement. Anyone claiming to represent the agency and offering special access to payments should be treated with caution.Neither the FTC nor Amazon will ask consumers to pay a fee to receive their refunds. Customers can verify refund information through the FTC's official Amazon refund page or the settlement administrator's website at SubscriptionMembershipSettlement.com.
