Los Angeles police have searched a Joshua Tree-area Airbnb as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Christina Lynn Downer, the 38-year-old sister of "Saturday Night Live" writer Jimmy Fowlie. The search adds a new development to a case marked by unanswered questions and conflicting accounts of her fate.

Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Division searched the area on Oct. 9, with help from Los Angeles Fire Department personnel, according to KTLA and SFGATE. Police have not said what led them to the property or whether they recovered any evidence.

Downer was last seen in Los Angeles' Koreatown neighborhood in late 2025. Her case drew wider attention after Fowlie appealed for public help and later said his family had been told his sister was no longer alive. The LAPD disputed his account of the case's official classification.

Authorities have not confirmed that Downer is dead or that a crime resulting in her death has been established.

The Oct. 9 search is the latest development in an investigation handled by the LAPD's Robbery-Homicide Division because of what police have described as suspicious circumstances. LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman confirmed to SFGATE that detectives carried out the search with fire department support at an Airbnb in the Joshua Tree area.

Police have not given a reason for searching the property. They also have not said whether investigators were looking for physical evidence, a suspect or other information tied to Downer's disappearance.

It is unclear whether the search turned up anything that could move the case forward. Police have not said whether the case's official classification has changed since the department last addressed it in April. How investigators connected the property to Downer, and whether the search produced new leads, also remains unknown.

The case took a major turn in April, when Fowlie announced on Instagram that his family had been told Downer was no longer alive and that the investigation had become a homicide case.

"The LAPD has informed our family that Christina is no longer alive, and the case has officially transitioned from a missing person to a homicide investigation," Fowlie wrote in his post. He said the family's hope of finding Downer safe had shifted toward seeking answers and accountability.

The LAPD publicly contradicted that claim. In a statement reported by the Los Angeles Times and KTLA, the department said Downer had not been located and the case remained a missing-person investigation.

"Although the circumstances of her disappearance are suspicious, Ms. Downer has not been located, and her case has not been reclassified as a homicide," the department said.

The difference matters. Police have not confirmed her death, disclosed a cause of death or announced a homicide charge. The department says it is still investigating through its Robbery-Homicide Division.

Another open question involves Downer's cellphone and social media accounts. Fowlie said in April that the family believed someone may have accessed his sister's accounts to cover up her disappearance. He said the activity made it look as if Downer had chosen to withdraw from contact and included requests for money.

"The individual(s) in possession of her phone used it to hide the fact that she was gone, to ask for money, and to create a false narrative that she was going 'off the grid,'" Fowlie wrote.

The LAPD has not publicly confirmed these allegations. Authorities have not named anyone responsible for the alleged account activity or said whether digital evidence shows who controlled the accounts. Online activity could give investigators a lead, but it does not on its own establish what happened to Downer.

Her family had also used social media earlier to share missing-person information and ask the public for help.

Downer was reported missing in December 2025 after her family and friends grew worried about losing contact with her. She was last known to be in Koreatown.

Fowlie, who joined "Saturday Night Live" in 2022 as a writer, shared appeals asking the public to help find his sister. Colleagues and others in the entertainment industry helped circulate his posts. The family continues to seek information, while police say the investigation remains unresolved.

As of the latest reports, authorities have not announced that evidence was recovered at the Airbnb, named a suspect, or confirmed a change in the case's status. Anyone with information can contact the LAPD Missing Persons Unit at 213-996-1800. Anonymous tips can go to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

For now, the central questions remain open: why investigators searched the Joshua Tree property, what they found, if anything, and whether the search will bring new information about Downer's disappearance.
