Miranda Miele spends her days as an audiologist, but her internet persona is a whole lot more colorful.

Miele, 34, said she’s always been crafty. After getting laid off for a couple of months at the beginning of the pandemic, she decided to channel that creative energy into starting something fun on social media. She began bedazzling things left and right, doing DIY tutorials, and up-cycling furniture and clothing around her house. She started an Instagram account, Pineapple Princess Creations, to show off her work, and five years later, it boasts 264,000 followers. In her bio, she describes herself as a “DIY princess” and a “tropical Barbie.”

Growing up in Weymouth, Miele was obsessed with all things tropical. After all, what’s more elusive to a kid in Massachusetts than palm trees? Add in her parents’ affinity for Jimmy Buffett music, and Miele was enamored by anything tinged with heat waves and sandy beaches. The Millennial gray era only enforced her love of color.

“I want the opposite of that,” she told herself.

In her previous home, a rental, she said she went for a tiki/Margaritaville theme. And when she purchased her current home in Hull, she decided she wanted to continue the tropical motif — but kick it up a notch. She decided on a luxury Miami ’80s penthouse aesthetic for her primary bedroom. But sourcing the items was not so easy.

“That’s the thing that a lot of people don’t realize. It is a lot of hard work, especially up in Boston,” said Miele. “I have sourced pieces from all over the country.”

With the aesthetic nailed down, she secured a bed frame online before she even closed on the Hull home she shares with her husband. She found the piece in poor condition in Tampa, Florida, and hired a shipper to bring it up to her. She now goes on Facebook Marketplace throughout the country, moving the location around depending on the item she’s searching for. She knows New York has a lot of postmodern ‘80s decor, while New Jersey favors a casual beach vibe. But Florida is, naturally, where she finds that ‘80s Miami look.

The bedroom result: a pink palace reminiscent of Barbie’s dream house of the 1980s and ’90s, complete with white lacquer furniture, columns, swans, and palms.

One of the posts chronicling the DIY transformation — “paht six” as she quotes her dad saying — ended up going viral, racking up 4.6 million views and over 271,000 likes. “Paht” 17 got 3.8 million views.

Her father can be seen in many of the videos, helping her drill the walls, create her next unusual masterpiece, and saying his catch phrase, “looks like it grew theah.” Miele has even designed a couple of pieces of furniture herself, since the style is extremely limited. (In the future, she’d love to create a line of ‘ 80s-inspired lamps, rugs, and mirrors.) Miele’s husband, who doesn’t appear in most videos, is “always behind the scenes doing the heavy lifting on things.”

Miele admits her husband has been skeptical about some of the designs. In particular, he had doubts about the columns in the bedroom and the “Scarface” Cadillac-inspired dresser in the nursery. “Yet [he] still drove an hour each way with me to pick the columns up from [a Facebook Mrketplace listing] and even sanded the dresser,” she said. “But [he] ended up loving both in the end and ultimately loves having all these crazy things in his house.”

He does have his own office color drenched in green. “I’m not allowed to put any pink in there,” Miele said with a laugh.

The transformation didn’t stop at the bedroom. The living room walls are also painted pink, and the room features a curved pink sofa, palm tree mirrors, and accent chairs straight out of the ’80s that she had shipped from Las Vegas. She calls this room the “Miami ’80s Sky Lounge.“ Hull may not be the Sunshine State, but the windows look out to the water, adding to the Miami fantasy.

When Miele discovered she was pregnant, she knew she wanted to come up with a fun theme for the baby’s nursery. Since half the house was covered in pink already, she thought she’d lean into an ‘80s Barbie motif.

But when she discovered she was having a boy, she decided to challenge herself.

She came up with the idea of a “Scarface”-themed nursery. Her family said the idea was a little outlandish, but she went for it. Determined to put in some references to the movie in a baby-friendly way, she thought of the catchphrase, “The World is Yours” — which refers to Tony Montana’s pursuit of the American Dream and ruthless ambition in the film — and crafted a sign emblazoned with the phrase. For the door, she created another sign that says, “Say goodnight to the little guy.”

Miele says she doesn’t have anything particularly against the “sad beige mom” era, but this nursery, in a red, black, and gold motif, is anything but that. There’s a panther lamp that came from New York, and a giant mirror behind the crib from Miami is adorned with a baby panther she painted herself. A special-order cheetah-print carpet was the perfect finish. Now, her infant son is lulled to sleep under a mobile that says, “The World is Yours.”

Her favorite part of the home project has been having followers tell her she’s inspired them to infuse a bit of color into their lives. People come up to Miele around in Hull, she said, recognizing her and her creations from social media.

“The whole purpose of my page really is to inspire people to get out there and get creative,” said Miele. “If I can do a Miami ’80s time capsule house in Boston in 2026, then you can do anything.”
