Falkland Islanders reportedly have a lot of confidence of having a strong continued presence in the region

Military forces have been carrying out enhanced exercises in the Falkland Islands amid a tense situation with Argentina.

The Times reported that British soldiers have been ‘training to recapture the Falklands’. Paratroopers carried out an amphibious assault, and proceeded to carry out a 20-mile overnight hike and close-quarters combat missions.

Drills mirrored Operation Sutton in May 1982, when Britain began landing troops to repel the Argentinian invasion. The national publication said this was the first time such a war game has taken place in years. The B Coy 2 PARA (The Parachute Regiment) were involved in the exercise.

Extensive operations have been taking place in the region over recent months. Personnel from 5 The Rifles completed Exercise Cape Upholder in July. British Forces South Atlantic Islands (BFSAI) said an assault drill was organised on Wireless Ridge, followed by live-firing drills at Onion Range using mortars, snipers and machine guns.

Naval personnel aboard the Portsmouth-based patrol vessel HMS Medway carried out their own gunnery trials during Operation Southern Vigilance. Tests were carried out on the edge of the Falkland Islands Conservation Zone (FICZ).

A recent patrol saw the ship sail from the Falklands to the port of Punta Arenas in Chile, traversing across the coast of Argentina near Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego. The Chilean Navy previously said logistical call falling within existing bilateral cooperation on Antarctic matters, but Buenos Aires - run by populist president Javier Milei - described it as a ‘military incursion’.

Various baseless threats have been made by political figures in Buenos Aires. Mr Milei condemned the United Nations when he appeared at the general assembly, while condemning British plans to allow companies to drill for oil and natural gas north of the Falkland Islands.

Foreign secretary Ed Miliband approved oil drilling in the Sea Lion field, which is estimated to hold 1.7 billion barrels of oil and expected to start producing from 2028. Argentina is aiming to block this activity by lodging a legal action, alongside a complaint with the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.

Prime minister Andy Burnham said he will do “whatever it takes” to keep the Falkland Islands British, and recently stressed to US President Donald Trump the “clear and declared will of the islanders to remain British”.

Amid this rising tensions, the chairman of the Falklands legislative assembly, Jack Ford, said residents are confident that Britain would defend them. He told Radio 4s Today programme: “We have a very good relationship with the MoD (Ministry of Defence).

“There’s a significant presence in the Falklands and has been for many years… so I think we have a huge amount of confidence in all of them there in the Falklands, and the confidence in the British Government to defend us if that was ever required.”

Mr Ford said there are “benefits” for the MoD in having a presence in the south Atlantic as he responded to the argument that it is not realistic to have a military fortress there costing tens of millions of pounds. He added that islanders are “passionate and determined” to remain part of a British overseas territory and that “we don’t see that changing any time soon”.

“There are also a number of benefits for the MoD and the UK Government of the presence in the south Atlantic,” he said. “A strategically important location and benefits to the armed forces of having a presence there. We are a very free and welcoming nation that offers them an opportunity to train with limited obstacles, so there are a number of benefits for the armed forces not just there to provide that defence.”
