Handgun recovered from New Jersey lake sparks police investigation
Дата публикации: 14-10-2026 10:10:07
Two people magnet fishing at a lake in Gloucester County, New Jersey, discovered a handgun, prompting a police investigation into how the weapon ended up in the water.
Washington Township Police Department said officers responded to Grenloch Lake on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, after the two individuals reported finding the firearm.
When officers got to the scene, they recovered the weapon, which police identified as a Walther PPS semiautomatic handgun.
According to police, the handgun showed signs of prolonged exposure to water and was collected as evidence.
Detectives are now working to recover and verify the gun’s serial number, trace its history and determine whether it may be connected to a previous crime.
At this time, police said it is unclear how the gun ended up in the lake.
“After all, handguns don’t typically find their way to the bottom of a lake on their own,” police wrote in a post.
Police also thanked the individuals for immediately reporting the discovery, “We commend the individuals who made this unusual discovery for immediately contacting police.”
Anyone with information regarding the gun is asked to contact the Washington Township Police Detective Bureau at 856-589-0330.
