NEXT TOYOTA SUPRA COULD FINALLY GO FULL JAPANESE
Rumours surrounding the next-generation Supra MK6 suggest Toyota could move away from their current 7 year old BMW partnership used for the A90 generation of the Supra. Instead, Gazoo Racing could take a much bigger role in developing the next Supra sports car, potentially giving it a more distinct Japanese identity and bringing back Supra lovers who didn’t want a BMW powerplant.
We have already seen how much work has been done on the 2025 model GR Supra which was designed as a limited Track Edition car.
One of the biggest rumours involves Toyota’s G20E turbocharged engine, which could bring a new performance formula to the legendary sports car. Hybrid technology has also been rumoured for the new car, potentially combining serious power with improved efficiency while preserving the Supra’s performance-focused character.
If Toyota develops the next Supra independently, it could mark a major turning point for the nameplate, bringing it closer to the spirit of legendary models like the A70 and A80 Supra cars that are collector cars today with very high values.
But the big question remains, will Toyota stick with the iconic inline-six formula, or take the Supra in a completely new direction?
Would you choose a G20E-powered Supra MK6, or do you think the next Supra needs an inline-six? What are your thoughts on this?
When the A90 Supra debuted, its collaboration with the BMW Z4 was a necessary financial and engineering shortcut that kept production costs manageable. Yet, it divided enthusiasts. Critics frequently pointed out that the cabin layout, switchgear, iDrive infotainment and the Bavarian engine tuning made it feel less like a true Japanese icon and more like a badge-engineered coupe.
By taking development completely in-house, Toyota’s Gazoo Racing (GR) division aims to reclaim the unadulterated DNA that made legendary generations like the MKIV a tuning and cultural phenomenon.
By the way, rumours suggest this new proprietary rear-wheel-drive GR developed architecture could also spawn performance siblings for Lexus and potentially even Mazda.
