Ensure debate

The repeated disruptions in Parliament are disappointing as they prevent meaningful discussions on issues that directly affect citizens. Parliament is meant to be a forum where different views are expressed through debate, not a place where proceedings come to a standstill. The Opposition has an important responsibility to question the government, while the government must be willing to address concerns and engage in constructive dialogue. When both sides remain unwilling to cooperate, public confidence in democratic institutions suffers. People expect their elected representatives to focus on governance rather than political confrontation. With several important national issues demanding attention, Parliament must function effectively and uphold the spirit of democracy. Respectful debate, accountability, and cooperation are essential for the institution to truly serve the people.

Exceptional craft

It was through this daily that I learned about the handloom weaver from Telangana who presented a silk sari, small enough to fit inside a matchbox, to the Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple. Such craftsmanship deserves greater recognition. There must be better promotion and awareness of handloom products.

Tamil Nadu budget

It is encouraging that the Tamil Nadu government has presented an Agriculture Budget with a focus on promoting digital agriculture and increased funding. This initiative is praiseworthy.

Indian agriculture continues to face several natural and man-made challenges, limiting its progress. In many parts of the country, farming still relies on manual labour and traditional tools such as wooden ploughs and sickles. Regulated markets, introduced to protect farmers from moneylenders and middlemen, also need to function more effectively.

Giving high priority to agriculture is essential not only for achieving food security but also for boosting agricultural exports. The government should continue to encourage modern farming practices, digital technologies, efficient irrigation, and greater support for farmers. At the same time, wetlands must be protected and preserved, and should not be converted into concrete structures at any cost.

A.J. Rangarajan,

Chennai
