TP-Link is dangling a $1 billion investment in American manufacturing to secure a conditional approval exemption from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding the U.S. ban on foreign-made Wi-Fi routers over national security concerns.

Indeed, the White House had granted temporary exemptions to several major networking vendors, but TP-Link was left off the list amidst ongoing scrutiny regarding alleged ties to China. The company, which relocated its global headquarters to Irvine, California, and maintains manufacturing operations in Vietnam, has vehemently denied these allegations and continues to push back against these governmental roadblocks.

In a recent four-page filing submitted to the FCC, TP-Link detailed a strategy that it could begin assembling next-generation Wi-Fi 8 routers inside the United States as soon as next year as part of its proposed multi-million dollar domestic commitment. Furthermore, the company emphasized that these devices would incorporate software and firmware fully developed, written, and maintained on American soil by its U.S. engineering team.

The petition specifically seeks conditional approval for two upcoming Wi-Fi 8 routers: Archer 8 Ultra and Deco 8 Ultra. Because of the U.S. restrictions, the company was forced to exclude the American market from its initial regional preorder for the Archer 8 Ultra.

However, TP-Link has an uphill battle to obtain clearance. A coalition of 21 state attorneys general have petitioned the FCC, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Homeland Security to block TP-Link's exemption attempt. Citing trade data, the coalition argued that 99.5% of the components used at TP-Link’s Vietnam facility are imported from China, alleging the supply chain connections pose unaddressed security risks. State officials warned federal regulators against granting exemptions that could compromise national communications infrastructure.

TP-Link responded sharply in its FCC submission, dismissing the claims as debunked rhetoric. The company reiterated that its U.S. customer data is strictly encrypted and hosted on Amazon Web Services infrastructure in Virginia, operating under rigorous third-party auditing standards. TP-Link also cautioned that applying an unattainable standard during the conditional approval process would stifle fair market competition, harm consumers, and undermine American leadership in adopting emerging wireless standards. Whether the billion-dollar promise will be enough to sway federal authorities (or the President) remains to be seen as the review continues.
