From schools and hospitals to commercial buildings, construction teams must coordinate vehicle and pedestrian traffic to protect workers and the public while facilities remain operational.
Transportation safety is often viewed from the lens of heavy civils construction. When resurfacing major thoroughfares, upgrading high traffic bridge projects and maintaining our nation’s highways, live traffic is an ever-present concern our infrastructure teammates are facing.
But workers on project sites across the industry face daily exposure to moving vehicles, pedestrian traffic and complex site logistics, and awareness of live traffic hazards on buildings projects is equally important.
K-12 education construction presents especially unique live traffic hazards that must be accounted for in our planning and coordination. Some projects have the luxury of operating when school is out of session, but many of our projects take place in active school settings where daily life is an inherent risk to jobsite safety.
School construction sites aren’t the only projects impacted by live traffic situations. Healthcare facilities remain open to patients and emergency vehicles during renovations. Commercial and government buildings maintain employee and visitor access while construction is underway. All require construction teams to safely navigate ongoing vehicle and pedestrian activity while work continues around daily operations. Across these project types, transportation safety depends on finding ways for construction and everyday life to safely coexist.
Our work zones intersect with moments that matter, from school drop-off and pickup to hospital shift changes, business operations, public meetings and community events. Transportation safety is not simply about controlling vehicle movement. It is about protecting workers who are building the facilities and the public who rely on these spaces every day while construction continues safely around them.
Planning Around PeopleEach campus has its own ecosystem with unique schedules, routines and behaviors. Teams must understand who is on campus, when they are present and how and where they move. Risk increases when we assume that people will change their habits for us. They usually do not, so we need to adjust to meet their needs.
On active school projects, live traffic management requires close coordination with principals and administrators to understand how our work impacts school operations. Before we ever mobilize on construction, we meet with the client to understand their expectations, needs and schedules.
