Police said he made it easy to identify him by leaving his wallet at the crime scene. Mayor Shelley Berkley has floated a pause on the event.
A teen suspect in a deadly shooting at downtown Las Vegas’ First Friday event was held without bail Tuesday, as the city’s mayor said the event might be put on hold in November.
Issac Manriquez, 17, is accused of shooting three teens and killing one, 15-year-old Carth Onasi Jacobs-Rodgers. Police said Manriquez made it easy to identify him by leaving his wallet at the crime scene.
Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley has suggested that there could be changes as a result, such as entry checkpoints or adjustments to city curfew rules.
“While discussions are ongoing with Metro Police, the First Friday Foundation and the city of Las Vegas there may be a pause on the event in November,” Berkley said in a statement provided by a spokesperson Tuesday.
Court records show Pro Tem Justice of the Peace William Jansen issued the no bail order for Manriquez at a Tuesday morning hearing.
The suspect faces counts of open murder and attempted murder.
Deputy District Attorney James Puccinelli said after court that the judge’s ruling showed the strength of the prosecution’s case.
“We’re really, really concerned with the brazen nature of this attack and murder,” he said.
Police provided 911 calls from the shooting that included witness accounts, a panicked person calling to report an acquaintance shot, and others calling to offer video evidence to police.
One caller from the Philly Freeze Me business in downtown Las Vegas reported the shots shortly after they unfolded.
“We’ve got a huge crowd that ran over here. … It’s First Friday,” the caller said.
Another male caller reported he was at the intersection of South Grand Central Parkway and Iron Horse Court with a friend who had been wounded in the shooting.
“He got shot in the leg,” the caller said. “The bullet didn’t leave him. He’s not bleeding too bad…We have him in the back of a truck right now.”
The caller later said “you can see the bullet poking through his leg.”
“We see an officer right now!” he said. “Wait wait wait. Wait! My friend is shot! Sir Officer! Over here! Okay we just got an officer. We got an officer who was passing by.”
Two other male callers reported to police that they had video evidence that could assist the police investigation.
“I was present at the shooting that took place last night at the First Friday event,” one of the male callers said, adding “I have some video that might help you guys.”
“What was the evidence?” a dispatcher asks.
“It’s a video,” the caller responded.
“A video of the whole situation?” the dispatcher asks.
“Yes,” the caller responded. “Like when the shooting happened it happened just like 50 feet across us. We kind of ran for our life and then I had the video on. It kind of recorded everything that was happening.”
Another caller reported to police they had a video of the assailant brandishing a gun in the moments leading up to the killing.
“I was at First Friday yesterday and I have a video of the fight and the kid who pulled the gun out,” the caller said. ” I don’t have a video of anyone getting shot but like the gunshots are in the video and you can see the kid pulling it out and it is the video of them fighting.”
The shooting was gang-related, and police said Manriquez confessed to the killing, the Metropolitan Police Department said in an arrest report.
“Once interviewed by detectives, Manriquez admitted to the shooting, which occurred because of two gangs roaming the First Friday event ‘banged’ on each other,” according to police.
Chief Deputy Special Public Defender Charles Cano did not immediately respond to requests for comment late Tuesday afternoon.
