Another day, another video game getting adapted into a blockbuster movie. Variety reports that Paramount has plans to adapt the popular sci-fi game “Cyberpunk 2077” for the big screen. Following a troubled late 2020 release by CD Projekt Red that was plagued with performance issues, the open-world RPG has gone on to sell 40 million copies worldwide; its 2023 expansion pack, subtitled “Phantom Liberty,” also sold 15 million copies.
Paramount’s plans to adapt “Cyberpunk 2077” should come as no surprise to those familiar with the Hollywood landscape of the 2020s. Big-screen video game adaptations have been highly successful this decade, with “Five Nights At Freddy’s,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” and “A Minecraft Movie” all surpassing box office expectations. “Five Nights At Freddy’s 2” and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” also fared well over the past year, with “A Minecraft Movie Squared” hitting theaters on July 23, 2027. Paramount greenlighting a “Cyperpunk” movie just a week before their “Street Fighter” movie hit theaters also suggests that the studio is confident that one will perform well, too. The studio also has a “Call Of Duty“ adaptation on the way, set for a June 30, 2028 release.
But back to “Cyberpunk 2077” for a moment. Set in the futuristic metropolis Night City, the player assumes the role of V, a mercenary implanted with a “biochip” that has the digital likeness of rock-star criminal Johnny Silverhand, played in the game by Keanu Reeves. V and Johnny must work together to separate their consciousnesses while battling the mega-corporation Arasaka, which controls the city. Reeves’ involvement in the game begs the obvious question: will the actor star in the Paramount movie? Time will provide an answer there.
“Transformers” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is currently involved with “Cyberpunk 2077,” with CD Projekt Red also on board to produce.
With “Call Of Duty” not out until Summer 2028, let’s predict that Paramount’s “Cyberpunk 2077” won’t hit theaters until 2029 at the earliest. Stay tuned to see if Reeves reprises his role of Johnny Silverhand on the big screen.
