2028 Tesla Roadster Rocket Photo by TeslaTesla’s Roadster has finally arrived, in a way, and it’s being presented as more than just your regular high-performance electric sports car. The EV coupe – first unveiled almost a decade ago, though completely updated in the interim – is fitted with fans intended to generate down-force while the vehicle is stationary (à laMcMurtry Spéirling); can be optioned with cold-gas thrusters for faster acceleration; and comes in an “invitation-only” trim designed to lift itself off the ground, do kickflips, and, essentially, fly.
The Roadster shown at the launch event was a real prototype, even if much of the online footage looks computer-generated. Even so, the Roadster as seen is intended for production, and the company is targeting manufacture beginning in 2028. It cautions prospective customers that put down money for reservations, however, that it cannot guarantee delivery at that time, or at all.
Tesla’s Canadian website outlines Performance, Thrust, and Rocket configurations, though its terminology is not entirely consistent: it lists Thrust and Rocket under “Augments,” while elsewhere Rocket is identified as a trim, and Thrust as an optional upgrade.

The Roadster is built on a new platform based around a rear-wheel-drive two-motor powertrain. Claimed output is of one megawatt, equivalent to roughly 1,500 hp, managing an estimated weight of 1,700 kg. The battery uses the company’s 4680 cells with a previously shared capability not exceeding 100 kWh. Driving range is estimated at 480 km, and 10%-to-80% charging times are apparently between 10 and 12 minutes.
The Performance grade, presumably the base model, is described as a two-seater “road-ready” model. Its multi-mode suction and ground-sealing system uses powered fans to draw air out from beneath the car, enabling maximum down-force. This system can produce down-force even when the car is stationary, as shown in the launch demonstration where the prototype moves slowly, upside-down, along an inverted track.
Coupled to the fans are active aerodynamic components such as wings and an active-adjustable suspension that can lower the car for levels of grip that seem impossible to imagine (unless you’re an F1 driver). According to figures available online, the Performance reaches 60 mph (96 km/h) from a standstill in under 1.6 seconds, nearly half-a-second faster than previously reported.
The Thrust version keeps the two seats and adds rear-mounted cold-gas thrusters. The company claims the thrusters can propel the Roadster from zero to 60 mph in less than one second, or as little as 0.81 seconds. Earlier online information described a high-pressure nitrogen tank feeding up to four thrusters, capable of launching the car to a top speed of 383 mph, or 616 km/h.

Tesla says they can provide upward and forward acceleration, rotation, and flight stabilization. It can also hit 60 mph in under 0.6 seconds. Tesla’s website also clearly states that Rocket is not approved for public road use, and may not be offered in every region.
The cabin features a central touchscreen, two smaller displays ahead of the driver, and a yoke steering “wheel” connected to steer-by-wire. Fixed seating, manual adjustments, and materials including magnesium, titanium, and carbon fibre are intended to reduce weight.
Reservations are already open on Tesla’s Canadian website, but availability for each configuration is unclear. You can reserve a Performance with a CDN$70,000 deposit, and a Thrust by putting down CDN$350,000; Rocket is marked “invite-only.” Tesla has not announced pricing, and the current reservation information does not indicate any sort of MSRP or delivery timing.
