A recall on the new EV is underway, but for now, owners are not being advised that they have to park their vehicle outdoors

The electric ID.4 from model years 2023 through 2026 are being recalled (the 2023 to 2025 models are covered in Canada) for a battery that may overheat and can potentially cause a fire. At the current time, VW has not issued an advisory asking owners to park outside; however, the manufacturer is suggesting owners only charge their vehicle to a maximum of 80% state of charge.
Notably, the issue comes from the battery overheating during charging, so it seems like a good idea to park outside while charging, if possible.
The reason for the battery overheating is still unknown, and VW is continuing to investigate the root cause of the problem. According to recall documents provided to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), certain charging past 80% can trigger thermal propagation within the high-voltage battery. Until a remedy is found, owners should continue to only charge to 80%. Volkswagen will shortly be sending an over-the-air update to vehicles to cap the charging at 80%, but this isn’t a permanent fix.
Owners will be notified by mail of this issue, but aside from limiting the charging, there’s nothing else to do until Volkswagen figures out a way to correct the problem. At that time, owners will receive a second letter confirming the fix, but it’s unknown how long it will take to figure out that repair.
This isn’t the first battery issue for the VW ID.4. Back in January 2026, the ID.4 was recalled for a battery-cell defect and owners were advised to park outside, as well as to only charge the car to 80%. In Canada, if you’re unsure if your vehicle is affected by a recall, you can check online at Transport Canada, using your VIN.
