Zirkle says a thwarted ISIS-inspired plot and controversial political symbolism point to deeper security and cultural concerns in Minnesota.

Jayne Zirkle is raising concerns about what she described as a broader cultural and security problem in Minnesota, pointing to both political symbolism and a recently thwarted ISIS-inspired terror plot targeting the Mall of America.
Zirkle began by arguing that elected officials are obligated to uphold the Constitution and said certain political displays can send the opposite message.
"When a politician becomes an elected official, they take an oath to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution and to protect our freedom. And to see a politician giving a speech in a foreign language in front of an inverted flag, it sends the message that they are standing directly in opposition to just that."
She thanked Elizabeth for drawing attention to the issue and argued that media coverage often focuses only on the end result of larger problems rather than what she considers warning signs.

"And I really want to thank you, Elizabeth, for highlighting this because it's something that a lot of the media typically skips over. We only see the result of this when, in reality, this is a symptom of a much larger problem, particularly that's happening in Minnesota, where there's a key Senate race, mind you."
Zirkle then turned to a recently thwarted terror plot that she said showed the seriousness of the concerns developing in the state.
According to Zirkle, the FBI disrupted an ISIS-inspired attack involving an 18-year-old man of Somali descent who allegedly intended to target the Mall of America.
"Because just a little over a week ago, the FBI thwarted an attempted ISIS-inspired terror attack that was attempted by an 18-year-old man of Somali descent because he wanted to target the Mall of America, and guess why? Because it was Jewish-owned."

Zirkle said the suspect intended to kill non-Muslims in the planned attack.
"He wanted to kill as many non-Muslims as possible in this terror attack."
She also described how federal authorities allegedly became aware of the suspect, saying he had made contact with an informant while trying to join Al-Shabaab, the Somali-based Islamic terrorist organization.
"How did the FBI find out about him? They found out because he actually made contact with an informant because he was trying to join Al Shabab, the Somali-based Islamic terrorist organization, but he couldn't afford the plane ticket to get to Somalia, so he decided to do what his mind was the next best thing in attacking the Mall of America."
Zirkle said the suspect’s inability to travel to Somalia ultimately led him toward planning an attack inside the United States instead.
Her comments tied the alleged plot to what she described as a larger problem in Minnesota, arguing that the episode should not be viewed in isolation.
The Mall of America, one of the state’s best-known landmarks, became the focus of the alleged plan, and Zirkle said the suspect’s motive centered on targeting non-Muslims.
She emphasized that law enforcement intervention prevented the plan from being carried out.
"But thankfully, the FBI stopped him in time."

Zirkle’s broader argument was that political and cultural developments in Minnesota deserve closer scrutiny, particularly when viewed alongside a terror case involving an alleged ISIS-inspired attacker who had also attempted to connect with Al-Shabaab.
She also noted that Minnesota is facing a significant Senate race, placing the discussion in the middle of an already heightened political environment.
For Zirkle, the combination of political symbolism and the FBI-thwarted plot represents evidence of deeper issues that she believes are being overlooked.
Her remarks ultimately centered on two themes: elected officials’ obligation to constitutional principles and the importance of taking extremist threats seriously before they result in violence.
