Collin Gosselin says the last conversation he had with his mother was a 20-minute visit at the Fairmount Behavioral Health System, where she had him placed four days before his 12th birthday in 2016, when he was 11.
Now 22, one of the sextuplets who grew up on TLC’s “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” Collin says Kate Gosselin used that one visit to tell him he had broken the family and deserved to be there, and that his siblings were doing well without him and didn’t care to see or talk to him.
He says he was in tears, and that they haven’t spoken since.

He says the words stayed with him for years. Being told as a child that he was a burden left him constantly apologizing as an adult, feeling like he was in the way of everyone around him.
He says that in the past year or two he’s worked past it and realized he isn’t a burden and doesn’t owe anyone an apology.
Collin’s memoir, “In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood,” came out October 13, 2026.
Kate has not responded to his specific account of the visit. In 2023 she called him a “very troubled young man” and said fabrications can occur when mental illness is involved.
