The development and conservation of Bidar’s historic Karez water system, particularly the Naubad-Aliabad Karez, were discussed at a meeting with the Bidar Yuva team and Bidar Urban Development Authority (BUDA) Chairman Vinod V. Appe and BUDA Commissioner H.P. Pramod.
During the meeting on Tuesday, co-founder of Team Yuva Vinay Kumar Malage focused on the need to protect the historic water channels, the Karez system, and explore their potential to improve groundwater recharge and address the city’s growing water needs.
Mr. Malage explained the importance of preserving the Karez system, which dates back to the Bahmani period, and protecting its underground channels and catchment areas.
The impact of urban growth, encroachments and changes in land use on the Karez structure was also highlighted.
The meeting explored possible measures to improve rainwater infiltration, support groundwater recharge and protect the surrounding environment.
Mr. Malage stressed that any development should be based on a scientific assessment and should not damage the original structure of the Karez system.
BUDA members Vinod Kumar Bandge and Mohammed Sami also took part in the discussion and shared their suggestions.
Mr. Appe suggested a joint site inspection of the Karez system, involving BUDA officials and representatives of the urban and town planning departments.
The inspection will help assess the condition of the water channels, identify obstructions and explore suitable conservation and development measures.
Mr. Malage stressed the need for coordination among the departments concerned to prepare a comprehensive plan for the Karez system.
He said that the conservation of Bidar’s traditional water infrastructure can help protect its heritage while supporting groundwater recharge and the city’s long-term water needs.
