Honda brought its Avatar Robot technology to CEATEC 2026, offering a live demonstration of how people could one day perform hands-on work without traveling to the job site. Ubergizmo visited the booth in Japan and spoke with Honda representatives about the project, which combines a remotely controlled robot with AI assistance.

The high-level idea is straightforward: a person operates a robot located somewhere else (hence, the “Avatar” name), using its cameras and robotic hands to interact with physical objects. Honda envisions applications ranging from equipment maintenance to disaster response, where an expert’s skills could be useful even when that person cannot readily reach the location. The CEATEC exhibit demonstrated technology under development toward that goal.

As suggested, the Avatar Robot relies on a human operator to assess the situation and decide what to do. AI is intended to help translate those intentions into accurate movements. Remote manipulation is difficult because camera views make distances harder to judge, and operators lack the natural sense of touch they would have when handling an object themselves.

Honda describes assistance that estimates the intended object and grasp from the operator’s eye and hand movements. Using 3D measurements, the system is designed to correct the robotic hand’s position and angle.

Cameras, fingertip force sensors and contact sensors help check the grip, allowing gripping forces to be adjusted. Vibration feedback through the operator’s gloves provides additional information about contact. These are the functions Honda describes for the broader project; we did not independently verify which assistance functions were active during the demonstration we watched.

At the booth, a Honda staff member operated the R&D prototype live from a small control room within the exhibit. The setup demonstrated remote manipulation over a short distance, with the operator physically separated from the robot.

The robot on display was stationary, with no legs or ability to move around the exhibition. Visitors watched the demonstration; the controls were reserved for the staff operator. This focused the presentation on the robotic hands and their operation.

Honda’s multi-fingered hand is designed to combine delicate handling with a firm grip and to use tools made for humans. Its broader technical documentation describes capabilities including picking up a coin, opening a bottle cap and repositioning a screwdriver within the hand.

Honda publicly introduced the Avatar Robot initiative in 2021, drawing on its robotics experience with ASIMO. At the time, it envisioned practical use in the 2030s.
