Kawasaki unveiled a 60x44x29 cm four-legged robot that grips hulls with electromagnets for welding and seam checks. Demo 2027; practical use targeted ~2028.

Ship hull welding still means people on high-reach gear in heat and height. Kawasaki Heavy Industries just showed a different idea: a four-legged prototype that sticks to steel with electromagnets and is meant to weld, not only inspect (“looks a bit like a wall-crawling GITS spider”).
According to NHK World, the robot measures only 60 by 44 by 29 centimeters (23.62 by 17.32 by 11.42 inches). It grips the ship’s hull with electromagnets, uses cameras and sensors to check seams, and decides how much welding is needed. That is physical AI in yard language: assess the joint, then weld. Do not read this as an inspection-only crawler.
Kawasaki unveiled the prototype around Oct 6, 2026 at its Group Vision 2030 Progress Report Meeting. Trade coverage and Japanese broadcast put demonstration testing at Sakaide Works in Kagawa in 2027, with practical use targeted around 2028 (TBS frames full operation from FY2028). Treat that as a company timeline, not a machine already walking commercial hulls.

NHK World links the push to a shortage of experienced welding engineers and the hope of keeping production going in high summer heat. Kawasaki’s Vision 2030 materials also flag labor-intensive shipbuilding and a decline in skilled welders. Broader Kawasaki R&D talks about welding, painting, and quality checks for open-space robots, but painting is not locked as an NHK-confirmed capability on this prototype. Leave paint as a program goal, not a demo claim.
We wonder whether the first Sakaide runs will put a torch on the hull for real or mostly prove mobility and seam judgment. Either way, the real test is whether veteran weld judgment can transfer to a machine that climbs where people shouldn’t have to.
Watch 2027 at Sakaide. That is when this stops being a Vision meeting prop and becomes a yard tool, or does not.
