“Don’t mess with the Mouse” is a common saying referencing how aggressively Disney defends its copyright, but it may need an update to “Don’t mess with the Beaver.”
Iconic Texas travel center chain Buc-ee’s has settled its copyright lawsuit protesting unlicensed merchandise featuring what appears to be Buc-ee the Beaver dressed in military gear. South Carolina-based retailer Born United has been ordered to pay Buc-ee’s $850,000, stop selling any merchandise featuring the beaver, and destroy any remaining merchandise and advertisements featuring the beaver, according to court documents filed in August.
Born United sells merchandise that “supports patriots,” featuring slogans like “Lift Heavy Pray Hard” and “Lift Heavy Shoot Guns,” T-shirts that bear Anthony Fauci’s photo edited with a clown nose, and Charlie Kirk memorial products.
The South Carolina brand is far from the first company to come under the watchful copyright eye of the beaver. Buc-ee’s has sued myriad gas stations, shopping marts, and more for alleged copyright infringement, going to federal court more than 10 times in the past 13 years. It’s become such a pattern that comedian and host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, John Oliver, did an entire segment on the phenomenon earlier this summer.
