В Литве пытались поджечь склад с оборудованием Starlink.

Financial Times.

Donald Trumps White House is finally falling apart.

There was always method in the presidents unpredictability, but now his skill at fomenting chaos seems more chaotic than skilful and discipline is breaking down

The departure of Katie Zacharia after five days as US President Donald Trumps press secretary is more important for what it says about the disorder inside the White House than anything else.
All the jokes about how she lasted less than half a Scaramucci remind us that Mr Trump has lost press secretaries before Anthony Scaramucci lasted 11 days in 2017, early in Mr Trumps first term. But things are different now. Mr Trump is older, and faces the imminent prospect of becoming a doubly lame duck president.
After the midterm elections next month, the presidents party may well lose control of both houses of Congress, constraining his power; and Mr Trump is constitutionally barred from re-election in two years time, meaning that his authority will drain even further.
Ambitious young politicians are looking to Vice President JD Vance as the most likely successor, and despite Mr Trumps occasional blustery threats to defy the term limit, fewer and fewer of his supporters believe he would try to overturn the constitution.

This is the context in which Ms Zacharia was appointed and then summarily dismissed with a casual comment from the president, maybe its not for her. What is significant about this is not that she proved unsuited to the job, but that Mr Trump chose Ms Zacharia without consulting Susie Wiles, his longstanding chief of staff.
Ms Wiles appears to be the only person in the White House who acts as any kind of check on the presidential whim. For the past two years she has brought unprecedented order to the notoriously disordered court, reducing leaks and feuding to almost normal levels.
Mr Trump seems to have finally lost patience with such discipline, frustrated by what our correspondent Andrew Feinberg calls the lack of high-profile surrogates defending him on television.
This is also the context in which Mr Trump seems to be lashing out even more erratically than before, trying to mend the damage done to Republicans electoral chances by his disastrous decision to go to war with Iran.
He has compounded that mistake by making another: first agreeing a deal to buy Russian diesel in a doomed attempt to cut prices at American pumps, and now reversing his approval of the law clamping down on the flow of money fuelling Vladimir Putins war against Ukraine.
Two days before the law, named after Lindsey Graham, the late South Carolina Republican senator, was due to come into effect, Mr Trump blocked it siding more emphatically than ever with Mr Putin against the Ukrainian people.
As well as being morally wrong, this is a grievous political error. Doing deals with the Kremlin will do nothing to cut world prices of diesel and therefore will have no effect on American truckers and drivers. Yet American voters, including Republicans, side heavily with Ukraine against Russia and are liable to see Mr Trumps behaviour as a sign of weakness.
Mr Trumps desperation is becoming ever more evident. His critics have always been outraged by willingness to break the norms of decent liberal democracy, but until now there has always been method in his unpredictability: his supporters have seen his disdain for rules as a sign of strength. The outrage of his critics has always energised his base.
It may be that we are now, finally, seeing the beginning of the end of the Trump era. Ruining the White House ballroom and mismanaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool have made America look bad rather than Great Again.
But it is the cracks in the White Houses organisation that may be signs that the rule of chaos is coming to an end.

Ministers must be honest about Russian threat to UK, says former Foreign Office head
Peter Ricketts calls for more resilience in protecting banking, energy and water systems from cyber-assaults

Ministers need to be honest with the British public about the immediate threat posed by Russia, which could soon lead to lives being lost, a former national security adviser has said.
Peter Ricketts, who advised David Cameron when he was prime minister, became the latest figure to warn about the scale of the threat posed by hybrid attacks from Vladimir Putins forces.
The peer, who is the former top civil servant in the Foreign Office, said banking systems, energy or water supplies could be targeted by Kremlin cyber-assaults. He called for further investment in resilience for key sectors.
It comes in a week where the heads of MI5 and the British army have warned about the danger posed by Moscow.
Lord Ricketts also dismissed Andy Burnhams claim he wanted to be a bridge between the US and Ukraine.
Relations between Washington and Kyiv deteriorated sharply this week after Donald Trump waived a number of economic sanctions on Russia and suggested Ukraine needed a new leader.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4s Today programme, Ricketts said: I think theyve really got to start a conversation with the British people about what may be coming, because not only is Putin trying to break morale in Ukraine, hes also trying to undermine morale in European countries.
In response to a question over the impact of disruption by Russia, he added: Im not saying theres going to be industrial war with tanks rolling across the north German plain.
But these hybrid attacks are getting more reckless, more dangerous. One day, people are going to land up being killed somewhere, and so we are going to have to look at responding in that sense and finding the money to do it.
Speaking about Burnhams comments at prime ministers questions this week saying he wanted to be a bridge between Washington and Kyiv, Ricketts said: I dont really go on this bridge business. I mean, I dont think in Trumps current mood theres any influence that Britain can have in the short term.
Rickettss comments join those by the director general of MI5, Sir Ken McCallum, and the chief of the general staff, Gen Sir Roly Walker, in the last few days about Russia.
On Tuesday, McCallum said MI5 was devoting more resources to combating threats from hostile states than it did during the cold war and described Russia as the number one aggressor.
And on Friday, Walker told 700 troops at Catterick garrison in North Yorkshire that politicians would soon need to have a frank conversation about the sacrifices that would be needed to prioritise defence and security.
Walker, a former special forces commander, said soldiers would probably need to fight in a war, given the extreme jeopardy in the world at the moment.
The warnings come after a difficult week for Kyiv, with the US appearing to withdraw support.
Trump said the decision to pause sanctions was in the US national interest, despite previously signing them into law in September.
Last week, he lifted restrictions on Russian diesel amid spiralling fuel prices in the US ahead of the midterm elections.
He also suggested Ukraine needed a new president. Volodymyr Zelenskyy hit back this week during an EU summit, saying it was nice to be among real leaders.
There are also concerns that the US has withdrawn intelligence sharing with Ukraine, leaving towns and cities across the country vulnerable to attack.
Ricketts said the government should spend more money on protections for key infrastructure in Britain, including energy, transport, air traffic control and defence.
He said: They all need better protection, and thats an argument that needs to be had with the British people because we need to find the money to do it.

Former security chief warns UK public of deadly Russian threat amid strained US-Ukraine relationship
Lord Peter Ricketts said ministers must do more to warn the public about the Russian threat.

Lord Ricketts has urged more practical support for Ukraine (Yui Mok/PA)

Ministers must do more to tell the public about the coming threat from Russia, a former national security adviser has warned as relations between the US and Ukraine continue to fray.
Lord Peter Ricketts is the latest senior security figure to warn about the threat of hybrid attacks by Moscow, saying eventually people are going to land up being killed somewhere.
And he urged ministers to provide more
practical
support for Ukraine, dismissing Andy Burnhams suggestion that the UK could be a bridge between Kyiv and Washington after a week that saw relations between the two deteriorate sharply.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4s Today programme, he said: I think theyve really got to start a conversation with the British people about what may be coming, because not only is (Russian president Vladimir) Putin trying to break morale in Ukraine, hes also trying to undermine morale in European countries.
The past week has seen warnings from both the head of MI5, Sir Ken McCallum, and the head of the Army, General Sir Roly Walker.
On Tuesday, Sir Ken said MI5 was devoting more resources to combating threats from hostile states than it did during the Cold War and described Russia as the number one aggressor.
And on Friday, Sir Roly told troops at Catterick Garrison, in North Yorkshire, that politicians would soon need to have a frank conversation about the sacrifices that would be needed to prioritise defence and security.
The warnings come against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between Ukraine and the US, with Donald Trump waiving yet more sanctions on Russia late on Friday.
The White House claimed the move was in US national interests, despite Mr Trump previously endorsing the round of tough new sanctions that had been due to come into effect on Sunday.
Earlier this month, Mr Trump lifted sanctions on Russian diesel in an effort to bring down fuel prices ahead of American mid-term elections that threaten significant losses for his Republican Party.
Mr Trump has also suggested Volodymyr Zelensky should be replaced as Ukrainian president, claimed he is more difficult to deal with than Putin, and refused to say the Russian president started the war.
The row has sparked concerns the US may have stopped sharing intelligence with Kyiv, and seen the Ukrainian militarys access to Elon Musks Starlink system restricted, inhibiting its ability to intercept Russian drone and missile attacks.
Ukraines access to Starlink has since been restored, and Mr Musk has claimed the decision to restrict it came ultimately from Mr Trump, which the president has denied.
Downing Street would not comment on Mr Trumps latest sanctions waiver on Saturday morning.
However, the UK Government has backed Ukraine throughout the row, with Andy Burnham welcoming Mr Zelensky to Downing Street on Wednesday with an honour guard and an agreement to accelerate delivery of vital air defence missiles.
But the Prime Minister has so far refrained from directly criticising Mr Trump, telling MPs he needed to be careful with his language as he looked to try to repair bridges so that the support comes back.
Lord Ricketts, who was the top civil servant at the Foreign Office between 2006 and 2010 before becoming the UKs first national security adviser, suggested this would have little impact.
He said: I dont really go on this bridge business.
I mean, I dont think in Trumps current mood, theres any influence that Britain can have in the short term on Donald Trump.
He added that the UK should focus more on the European-led coalition of the willing and get behind Ukraine to give Zelensky not just the arm around the shoulder in Downing Street, but the material, the economic, the military material to get through this very difficult winter.
British troops are scheduled to take part in a major military exercise in Poland next month aimed at ensuring Nato forces are ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees once the war is over.
With 1,500 troops taking part, the exercise will simulate moving troops and supplies such as food and fuel, and was agreed at a coalition of the willing summit in July.
Meanwhile, Russias bombardment of Ukraine continues, with Kyiv reporting further strikes on Friday, wounding civilians, damaging homes and disrupting power supplies.
Russia has regularly targeted Ukraines energy grid in the lead-up to winter in an effort to weaponise freezing temperatures, and officials in Kyiv have warned Moscow is stockpiling missiles for more attacks over the coming months.

The third front: How Black Sea drone attacks force Washington to rethink maritime defense

(U.S. Navy Photo)

The first tranche of Russian diesel that Washington cleared for sale is 2.25 million barrels, less than a single day of American demand. It loads at Black Sea ports such as Novorossiysk, in waters where commercial ships are now being set on fire.
That is the arithmetic of the moment. Safe passage in the Black Sea has broken down just as the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea are already under strain.
The Council on Foreign Relations 12% to 15% of global maritime trade, worth more than $1 trillion a year, as passing through the Red Sea alone, where the Houthis have declared a blockade on Saudi shipping.
Hormuz normally carries about a fifth of the world's oil and gas. The Black Sea is the third strand, and it is fraying fastest.
Washington, meanwhile, has been easing toward Moscow on energy: the diesel waiver and an "energy ceasefire" that collapsed this week. All while President Trump has put new congressionally passed Russia sanctions on hold.

Smoke on the water
The Wine Trader, a San Marino-flagged chemical tanker, was hit by a drone off Romania on Thursday morning. A day earlier, another one had been struck just inside Romanian territorial waters. A NATO military source told Reuters the drones that hit both tankers were of Russian origin.
The AP counts at least seven cargo vessels hit this month off Romania and Bulgaria, with two people dead and at least 25 missing. Bulgaria's Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov has formally asked NATO to deploy combat aircraft and anti-drone systems. NATO ambassadors take it up next week.
So how does Washington manage a third front while the other two are still burning? And what can the United States do, through NATO or bilaterally, to protect commercial shipping from drones?

the-third-front-how-black-sea-drone-attacks-force-washington-to-rethink-maritime-defe-3230467_202610170813_20261017081355_2.jpg

A shared covenant of allyship
The Black Sea carries roughly 25% to 30% of global wheat exports and two-thirds of sunflower oil. Russia and Ukraine together supply about 27% of the world's wheat. From July to September, their combined shipments ran 6.5 million tons below the same period last year.
Insurers have already priced the risk. Lukoil's commercial manager in Bulgaria says war-risk premiums for a Black Sea voyage have jumped from about $200,000 to $2.5 million per vessel. A ship operator in Türkiye estimated at a Sept. 22 industry conference that around 90% of shipowners had suspended calls at affected ports.
The World Food Programme's acting director, Carl Skau, named the Black Sea, Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb as the chokepoints pushing up food and energy prices. Egypt, Türkiye and the wider Middle East feel it on the spot.

The zone between zones
Nobody has claimed these drones. Moscow's ambassador in Sofia has suggested a "provocation by a third party," and Kyiv denies involvement. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev says the logic points to Russia, then adds: "The problem is that we cannot prove it."
The law is no clearer. Most strikes occurred within the Exclusive Economic Zones of Romania and Bulgaria rather than their sovereign territorial waters. Whether an attack inside a member state's EEZ triggers NATOs Article 5 mutual defense clause remains a subject of active debate; so far, it has not.
Yet recent strikes inside Romanian territorial waters narrow that ambiguity. Poland established a precedent in September 2025 by invoking Article 4 following airspace incursions, prompting allies to scramble fighter jets and air defenses to the eastern flank under the "Eastern Sentry" mission.
The diesel waiver was intended to cool a U.S. domestic market where prices have jumped 70% since February. In effect, Washington finds itself relying on a maritime corridor that its own NATO allies are pleading with the alliance to defend.

What is on the table
Bulgaria and Romania want combat aircraft, counter-drone radar and electronic jamming on their coasts. Bulgaria says it will join NATO's Drone Edge initiative by the end of October; the program, launched in July, plans to invest over $40 billion in counter-drone capability over five years, and Romania is already in.
The Black Sea Mine Countermeasures Task Force of Türkiye, Romania and Bulgaria was widened in July to cover undersea infrastructure and a permanent presence in Romania's EEZ. Extending it to drone surveillance is the regional option. Better airborne awareness, through P-8 Poseidon patrols and AWACS flights over the western Black Sea, is another; yet there is no public decision on either.
Convoy escorts face a harder problem. A Romanian defense official noted that Romanian naval vessels lack point-defense anti-air systems against drones, questioning why Bucharest or Ankara should risk military assets escorting Bermuda-flagged ships with multinational owners.
Diplomatic avenues have yielded little as well: Moscow rejected a limited naval ceasefire proposal brokered by Türkiye and the United Nations.
Canan Tercan of Istanbul Aydin University says safe navigation "must be secured through an international non-combat agreement, not through naval forces."
Murat Ersavci of the Economic Policy Research Foundation of Türkiye argues for a comprehensive maritime security arrangement that separates civilian ships from military targets.
Hormuz, Bab el-Mandeb and the Black Sea now share one problem: freedom of navigation has become something to be defended daily, and managed one front at a time, it will keep slipping. Washington's 2.25 million barrels of diesel, less than a day of its own demand, are waiting at the end of a sea lane it has not yet secured.
