An urgent recall has been issued for packaged smoked salmon sold in six states over concerns it may be contaminated with deadly bacteria.

New York-based Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc is voluntarily recalling its frozen Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria that cause listeriosis.

The recall applies to products in 8oz (227g) vacuum-sealed plastic packages sold under the brand name Starfish Seafood.

The salmon was distributed in New York, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio. It can be identified by its lot number D080-148.

Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc initiated the recall after the potential contamination was identified by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets.

No illnesses have been reported.

The company is a wholesale distributor and did not manufacture the recalled product. Its country of origin is listed as Latvia.

Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc is now cooperating with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets regarding the recall and has notified its affected customers and requested they discontinue the use of and distribution of the recalled product and notify their customers.

The same bacteria are behind another major recall from the company issued on Monday. The Starfish Seafood Trio – Cold Smoked Salmon, Halibut and Trout – was stripped from store shelves over concerns of Listeria contamination.

The FDA notice is urging customers who have purchased the recalled product to not consume it and return it to the place of purchase.

It is not known how the smoked salmon was possibly contaminated with the bacteria, though this typically occurs through contact with contaminated soil, water, decaying vegetation or animal manure.

On Monday, Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc's seafood trio mix was recalled over fears of contamination with Listeria.

That recall applied to products in 8oz (227g) vacuum-sealed plastic packages sold under the brand name Starfish, and was distributed in New York, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina and South Carolina.

It can be identified by its lot number D139149161-153 and it has an expiration date of December 1, 2027.

It is also unknown how the seafood trio mix may have come in contact with Listeria, and no illnesses were reported in connection to that recall.

Many foods can harbor the bug, but it is usually found in unpasteurized milk, soft cheeses and ready-to-eat foods, such as pre-packed sandwiches.

Cooked shellfish, cured meats and fish, including sushi and pre-cut fruit, are also a risk.

While most of the 1,250 Americans infected with listeria each year recover on their own, the infection can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

About 250 Americans die of the infection each year, which can occur if the infection spreads beyond the gut and affects the central nervous system.
