SOUTH PARIS — The Oxford Hills football team needed to bounce back after a blowout loss to Bonny Eagle last week.
The Vikings did in a big way, dominating defending Class A North champion Portland 29-0 on Saturday afternoon.
“We knew it was just a bad night for us at Bonny Eagle and we just had to get past it and keep moving forward, ” Oxford Hills quarter Toby Oufiero said of the Vikings’ 45-6 loss to the Scots on Oct. 9. “Work hard this week, which we did. Came out here and put up a good fight and won.”
Oufiero had a touchdown pass and ran for a touchdown to lift the Vikings past the Bulldogs, who are ranked fifth in the Varsity Maine poll. The win moves the Vikings (5-1) into first place in Class A North, a position they will try to solidify in the final two games against Noble and Bangor.
Portland drops to second at 5-2.
“We just got to keep battling,” Oufiero said. “It’s not over yet, and hard work every day.”
HOW IT HAPPENEDOxford Hills took the lead on a 4-yard rushing touchdown by Keegan Ridley in the second quarter and stretched it to 15-0 when Tucker Hilden took a shovel pass from Oufiero into the end zone from 3 yards out with 49 seconds left in the first half.
Portland struggled to sustain anything offensively. Oxford Hills pulled away in the second half with a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Oufiero and a 45-yard run by Carter Davis.
UNSUNG HEROMason Ridley was a playmaker throughout. He caught a 2-point conversion pass in the second quarter, was a factor defensively, and racked up yards as a punt returner.
HEARD IT HERE FIRST• “Having only 27 guys on the team, it’s tough to, when you face teams like Bonny Eagle, when you face teams like Portland with (Alex Martin), to simulate the speed and the strength of their lines and stuff like that, so we really worked hard on just mentally being prepared.” — Oxford Hills coach Nate Danforth
• “Play a great team, you get better from that. That’s always a positive, right? Iron sharpens iron, especially in the regular season. So we’re grateful to have this experience. There’s a lot of positives we’re going to pull from it and a lot of teachable moments we’re going to pull from it.” — Portland coach Dylan Rottkov
STATISTICAL LEADERS• Oxford Hills: Toby Oufiero (8 of 13 passing, 62 yards, touchdown; 13 rushes, 55 yards, touchdown), Keegan Ridley (eight rushes, 38 yards, touchdown; two interceptions)
• Portland: Alex Martin (23 carries, 75 yards)
