Thornton Academy received all of the first-place votes and Bonny Eagle every second-place votes to again garner the top two spots in the Varsity Maine 11-man football poll, which is largely the same as it was last week.
There’s a couple games in Week 7 that could shake up the rankings. First, No. 7 hosts No. 5 Portland on Saturday in what will likely determine the top seed in Class A North. Second is the Class C clash in Cumberland between Greely and 10th-ranked Hermon. It’s likely that Class C’s defining game came in Week 2 when Leavitt took down Greely 30-12. However, Hermon has two chances to make a play for the classification’s top seed. First is this week against the Rangers, and the second is next week when the Hawks host No. 6 Leavitt.
A team that might benefit indirectly from the results of any of those games is eight-ranked South Portland. The Red Riots have played Thornton and Bonny Eagle better than anyone else this fall, and last week they beat then-No. 8 Massabesic. A win over Noble on Friday likely seals the Class A South’s third seed for South Portland.
In the eight-man poll, Spruce Mountain is back in after upending last week’s fifth-ranked team, Cape Elizabeth.
The Varsity Maine football polls are based on Week 6 games played through Oct. 10. The top 10 11-man and top 5 eight-man teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.
