A heroic Mississippi man went into the burning husk of his neighbor's house and dug through smoldering wreckage to rescue a little boy who was trapped.
Police body camera footage captured the incredible moment neighbor Kennard Hodge used his bare hands to pull the unconscious four-year-old boy from the home.
The fire occurred around 10pm on October 7 in Edwards, a town about 30 miles west of Jackson, according to the Hinds County Sheriff's Office. A total of six children were inside the home when the blaze began, police said.
By the time deputies and firefighters arrived, the home was already engulfed in flames and several neighbors had begun efforts to save the children.
Five of the children, aged 13, nine, three, two and two, were soon rescued by the neighbors, but the four-year-old boy was still trapped inside, police said.
Deputies searched the exterior of the still-ablaze house and quickly located the boy inside a bedroom by looking through the window. That is when Hodge leapt into action.
Body camera footage obtained by WAPT shows a deputy's perspective looking into the home through the window. Hodge could be seen bent over and pulling at wreckage while trying to get ahold of the child.
'Got him! Got him!' the heroic neighbor repeated as he pulled out the boy by the arm, picked him up and passed him to the deputy through the window.

Hodge can be seen pulling the boy's arm to get him out of the debris in the blurry and hectic video. The heroic neighbor then passed the four-year-old to the recording deputy
'All I wanted to do was to get the baby out, so he could have a chance,' Hodge later told WAPT.
Bystanders could be heard cheering and clapping after the deputy pulled the four-year-old through the window and laid him on the ground outside the burning house.
The boy was still unconscious, however, so deputies immediately began CPR. 'Come on, little man... Hang in there, bud,' one of them could be heard saying.
Another deputy then gave the boy oxygen, and he eventually began to breathe, though he remained unconscious.
The footage shows the four-year-old with burns on his body before he was placed onto a stretcher and rushed to the hospital.
The boy lived thanks to the efforts of neighbors and first responders, but his condition was listed as very critical on October 8, according to the Hinds County Sheriff's Office.
Police have not provided an update on his condition, though it appears the boy is still alive.
'This was nothing short of a miracle,' Edwards Police Chief Terrence Crump told WAPT.
Hodge saved the boy's life and later said: 'All I wanted to do was to get the baby out, so he could have a chance.' Hodge is pictured in front of the burned wreck of the home

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services has been notified and is assisting with the case, according to the sheriff's office.
The office also said that investigators would be interviewing 'several individuals connected to the incident.'
The Hinds County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that it 'commends the neighbors and responding deputies whose courageous actions saved multiple lives during this tragic event.'
The town of Edwards held an event on Saturday evening to honor the neighbors and community members who risked their lives to help the rescue effort and save six children.
