With a newly opened exhibition at London's V&A Museum entitled The Burberry Trench: Crafting An Icon, perhaps it was no surprise that there were even more trench coats than usual on parade at the Burberry show last night.

The 170-year-old British heritage brand, founded by Thomas Burberry in 1856, closed London Fashion Week with a polished collection and a starry front row led by model and brand ambassador Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, 39.

She wore a black leather calf-length coat decorated with epaulettes and cinched at the waist with a belt. She accessorised with a small black clutch.

Rosie was joined by Romeo Beckham, 24, and his model/DJ girlfriend Kim Turnbull, 25, who wore a cropped iteration in beige.

And 68-year-old actress Fiona Shaw also wore a variation of the trench.

Some guests opted to stay out of the trenches. Model Lila Moss, 23, far right, bucked the trend in a shimmering cowl-neck lurex mini-dress, while Iris Law, 25, right, also a model, matched a denim jacket and a pair of dark-wash jeans.

Although the most popular look of the night was leather, with actress and model Gemma Chan, 43, in a black leather boiler suit, and 40-year-old actress Jodie Turner-Smith in a brown leather jacket and black leather knee boots.

Which showed a degree of fortitude, given that it was a balmy 20C (68F) outside. 

But while guests were determined – or paid – to grit their teeth and wear clothes from Burberry's autumn/winter collection, on the catwalk the clothes were a little more suited to London's mild spell.

For spring/summer 2027, chief creative officer Daniel Lee opened with a pale pink taffeta trench coat in a voluminous silhouette, followed by more signature coats in spring-like colours such as daffodil yellow and pale green.

Skirts and dresses were embellished with floral prints, while floral embroidery enlivened shirts and pencil skirts. 

Fabrics were light, with nylon and parachute silk replacing leather.

Some of the looks could have been plucked straight from the catwalk and worn to a festival, such as a nylon windcheater, a bucket hat and low-slung baggy jeans.

For anyone hoping to go to Glastonbury next summer, Burberry's new collection should be just the ticket.
