U.S. Rep. Laura Friedman (D-Los Angeles) evacuated her Burbank district office on Oct. 16 after staff received an envelope containing a suspicious substance.
Friedman, who represents California’s 30th Congressional District, including West Hollywood, Fairfax, the Miracle Mile and Hollywood, said the office was evacuated under the guidance of law enforcement as first responders investigated.
“This morning, my district office received an envelope containing a suspicious substance,” Friedman said. “Out of an abundance of caution, and under guidance from law enforcement, we evacuated. We will continue our work serving constituents and will be back in the office when responders tell us it is safe to return.”
No injuries were immediately reported. Friedman did not identify the substance or say whether authorities had determined if it was hazardous.
“I am grateful to Burbank and Glendale first responders for keeping everyone safe,” Friedman said. “Threats against lawmakers and the people who work for them have no place in this country. We will not allow them to stop us from working for the people of CD 30.”
The incident comes as federal authorities investigate a series of suspicious letters sent to congressional and election offices around the country. The FBI, U.S. Capitol Police and U.S. Postal Inspection Service are investigating multiple letters containing suspicious substances mailed to addresses nationwide, according to media reports.
Several lawmakers have been targeted, including Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), whose letter was intercepted before reaching his office. Similar mailings have prompted evacuations or law enforcement responses at government offices in multiple states. Some substances that have been tested were found to be non-hazardous.
It was not immediately clear whether the envelope sent to Friedman’s office was connected to the other suspicious mailings under federal investigation.
