Elton John opened the new Apple Music Hall at Battersea Power Station last night (Monday September 28) – with the show also broadcast outside the venue for fans to watch.

Sir Elton became the first artist to take to the stage at the new 600-capacity London venue, performing an hour-long, 12-song set drawn entirely from his classic catalogue.

The concert was livestreamed globally through Apple Music, while footage from Battersea Power Station showed the performance being projected onto the outside of the venue, meaning those who had not secured tickets could still catch a glimpse of the opening-night show.

John opened proceedings with ‘Your Song’, before digging deeper into his early catalogue for ‘The Greatest Discovery’ and ‘Border Song’.

Other highlights included ‘Bennie And The Jets’, ‘I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues’, ‘Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters’, ‘Tiny Dancer’, ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ and an extended ‘Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going To Be A Long, Long Time)’.

‘I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues’
‘Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters’
‘Tiny Dancer’

‘Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me’

Apple Music Hall was unveiled earlier this month as the company’s first dedicated live venue.

Located inside Battersea Power Station, it has been designed to combine the atmosphere of an intimate club with large-scale production capabilities. It features a reconfigurable 38-foot stage, a 48-speaker Spatial Audio system, two dedicated recording and mixing studios and infrastructure for more than 16 cameras, allowing performances to be livestreamed around the world and turned into broadcast-ready recordings.

John already has a long-standing relationship with Apple Music. He has hosted his weekly Rocket Hour radio show since 2015 and has now presented more than 400 episodes, using the programme to interview established artists and champion new acts.

Speaking to NME in 2021, he said the show had introduced him “to a whole ballgame of new artists”, adding: “I’ve never lost the desire to hear new music.” More recently, he has welcomed artists including Sam Fender and Fontaines D.C. onto the show, memorably describing the latter as “the best band out there at the moment”.

Apple Music Hall will next host Baby Keem on October 2, followed by Skye Newman, Troye Sivan, Arlo Parks, Burna Boy, Chase & Status and Charli XCX across the remainder of 2026.

Last night’s performance was another of the selective live appearances John has continued to make since stepping away from regular touring at the end of his mammoth ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ run in 2023.

Earlier this month, he headlined Rock In Rio in Brazil, having previously said that “the energy these big one-off shows have been giving me since I stopped touring is unbeatable”.

He will next play two previously cancelled ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ shows in Mexico City on October 2 and 3, which were resurrected after originally being lost during the pandemic.
