With the Linux 7.3 kernel due out for release on Sunday, I've continued running more benchmarks recently of this forthcoming kernel version and it looks great. In my Linux 7.3 testing of the Git state it's been looking great in testing on a variety of hardware shown across multiple systems. Recently I decided to try out this new kernel code on the 96-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX workstation.

The Threadripper PRO 9995WX 96-core / 192-thread HEDT workstation processor is already in a class of its own and with Linux 7.3 the performance is continuing to incrementally go even higher, on top of gains from optimizations in prior versions of the Linux kernel.

When comparing Linux 7.2 to Linux 7.3 Git, there are some nice evolutionary improvements for this AMD Zen 5 workstation platform:

Flexible IO Tester benchmark with settings of Type: Random Read, Engine: IO_uring, Direct: No, Block Size: 4KB, Job Count: 1, Disk Target: Default Test Directory. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

Flexible IO Tester benchmark with settings of Type: Random Read, Engine: IO_uring, Direct: Yes, Block Size: 4KB, Job Count: 1, Disk Target: Default Test Directory. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

Some nice I/O gains are to be found with Linux 7.3 especially for systems with modern PCIe Gen 4/5 NVMe storage.

PostgreSQL benchmark with settings of Scaling Factor: 100, Clients: 500, Mode: Read Write. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

PostgreSQL benchmark with settings of Scaling Factor: 100, Clients: 500, Mode: Read Write, Average Latency. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

This did translate into some nice wins on Linux 7.3 for real-world workloads like the PostgreSQL database.

MariaDB benchmark with settings of Test: oltp_read_only, Threads: 128. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

The MySQL fork MariaDB was faster too with Linux 7.3.

TigerBeetle benchmark with settings of Clients: 1. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

TigerBeetle benchmark with settings of Clients: 8. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

And TigerBeetle too for that financial transactions database.

xfr benchmark with settings of Server Address: localhost, Protocol: TCP, Threads: 128. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

xfr benchmark with settings of Server Address: localhost, Protocol: QUIC, Threads: 1. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

Ethr benchmark with settings of Server Address: localhost, Protocol: UDP, Test: Bandwidth, Threads: 1. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

Network performance riding higher too with Linux 7.3.

Stress-NG benchmark with settings of Test: Forking. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

Stress-NG benchmark with settings of Test: IO_uring. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

Stress-NG benchmark with settings of Test: Mutex. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

In kernel micro-benchmarks, tests like forking, IO_uring, and mutexes were faster with Linux 7.3.

Timed Linux Kernel Compilation benchmark with settings of Build: defconfig. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

Timed Linux Kernel Compilation benchmark with settings of Build: allmodconfig. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

Timed Godot Game Engine Compilation benchmark with settings of Time To Compile. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

Code compilation tasks were subtly but consistently faster with Linux 7.3 on this AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO workstation.

OpenVINO benchmark with settings of Model: Age Gender Recognition Retail 0013 FP16-INT8, Device: CPU, Benchmark Mode: Throughput. Linux 7.2 was the fastest.

OpenVINO benchmark with settings of Model: Age Gender Recognition Retail 0013 FP16-INT8, Device: CPU, Benchmark Mode: Throughput. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

Lemonade benchmark with settings of Backend: CPU, Scenario: code-short, Model: MiniCPM4-8B-GGUF. Linux 7.3 Git was the fastest.

And some small gains were observed in CPU-based AI workloads too.

Linux 7.3 is looking in great shape for release on Sunday and besides the performance there are also many new features in Linux 7.3.
