Lessons learned from Leeds United’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Man Utd at Elland Road.

Leeds United fought back from a goal down to draw 1-1 at home to Manchester United on Sunday. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s 51st-minute effort cancelled out a first-half Bryan Mbeumo finish to see the spoils shared between two rivals at Elland Road for a second season running.

The Whites were aggressive and front-footed from kick-off, Ethan Ampadu particularly snappy in the tackle and somewhat fortunate to escape an early booking. But they weren’t able to create any real chances before Mbeumo got on the end of a Youri Tielemans cross.

Calvert-Lewin’s leveller came just after half-time and from a corner, the striker in the right place to finish Tarik Muharemovic’s cross, but Leeds couldn’t carve out any further clear chances. Below, the YEP looks at three key takeaways from the game.

Fifth game unchanged

There were once again no surprises when the teams came out at 12.45pm, Daniel Farke naming an unchanged starting line-up for the fifth Premier League game running, which can be seen as both a positive and a question mark. A settled starting-XI is often a good thing, particularly in defensive areas where relationships and combinations are hugely important.

But it could also be argued there is a lack of serious competition across multiple positions and that can be evidenced by the fact that with a home game there to be won, Farke made only two substitutions. The Whites boss admitted after full-time there was a lack of final-third quality but neither Brenden Aaronson or Harry Wilson have delivered that quality yet while Jean-Matteo Bahoya’s opportunities have been minimal.

There is also a point to be made about unpredictability, a strength Leeds had in bucketloads during periods last season where predicting Farke’s starting-XI proved a real challenge. At the minute it feels easy, but that’s not necessarily an outright positive thing, particularly in attacking areas.

Early kick-off issue resurfaces

This will continue to be a talking point until Leeds make it disappear, but once again they have come through an early kick-off without winning. Farke’s side were not sleepy this time, in fact they were maybe too far the other way, overly keen to snap into challenges or slightly rushed in the final third.

On Sunday, Leeds simply couldn’t get going in the final third with key central players Anton Stach and Noah Okafor both off the pace. The flicks and quick touches that prove so irresistible when they work just didn’t come off with the only consistent threat being Jayden Bogle.

Leeds have now failed to win any of their last 21 Premier League games that have kicked off before 3pm, a quite incredible stat and according to Squawka, the longest run in the division’s history. Those dropped points have come in all different forms - slow starts, fast starts not capitalised upon, defensive openness, a lack of final third quality - but they keep coming.

Captain fantastic

What Leeds did show plenty of on Sunday was fight, with Ampadu at the heart of their aggression from the off. He got Elland Road rocking with a massive tackle on Carlos Baleba and was then a little fortunate to escape a booking for a late tackle on Mbeumo. With no yellow card holding him back, the Welshman continued to snap into tackles and irk the Manchester United players.

Ampadu’s yellow card did arrive in second-half added-time and his foul on Andrey Santos threatened to cause a melee, getting Elland Road up on its feet one final time. In a game that lacked too much final third drama, Leeds at least got to enjoy watching their captain do what he does best for a big personal match.

That was Ampadu’s 100th game as captain, the midfielder becoming the third-youngest to reach that milestone behind Billy Bremner and John Charles - some company. It would be hard to argue against suggestions the 26-year-old is Leeds’ best captain of the modern era. Here’s to another 100.
