PRAGUE — BeneMeat recently published a new scientific paper demonstrating the safety of cultivated meat, summarizing current knowledge on key safety aspects of the technology used to create such products while also highlighting areas where further research is needed.

Published in the scientific journal Physiological Research, the “Shaping the Future Plate: Exploring the Safety Concerns of Cultivated and Conventional Meat Production” paper was written by Petra Nevečeřalová, Ph.D., R&D biologist at BeneMeat; Hana Raschmanová, Ph.D., research scientist at BeneMeat; Peter Gorilák, Ph.D., molecular biology specialist at BeneMeat; and Jan Černý, Ph.D., professor at the Department of Cell Biology at Charles University.

The paper dives into the microbiological safety of cultivated meat production, as well as the stability of cell lines and their immortalization, genetic modifications, the composition of cultivation media, allergens and nutritional profiles. It also analyzes how risks can be identified, controlled and assessed throughout development, production and downstream processing.

Through the paper, BeneMeat aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion about the safety of cultivated meat that is grounded in scientific evidence. According to the company, the safety of cultivated meat technology should not be limited to just meeting regulatory requirements, but should also include continuous assessment, transparency and open scientific discussion.

“Addressing the safety of cultivated meat is essential to ensure consumer health, build market trust, and clear the regulatory hurdles required to scale a novel food technology,” Nevečeřalová said. “BeneMeat thoroughly addresses safety, not only through extensive literature reviews, but also via diverse analytical testing.”
