Cruise lines have spent years building bigger ships, bolder attractions, and better onboard experiences. Now, the battle for vacation dollars is making a splash off the ship.
Norwegian Cruise Line is taking its newest plunge at Great Stirrup Cay, enhancing the experience on its private island with a brand-new water park.
Great Tides Waterpark is now open, offering six acres of wet and wild excitement packed full of options for all ages.
“Great Tides Waterpark is really kind of the next generation for water parks,” said Lee Applbaum, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief marketing officer.
“We didn’t think about how to create the best water park on an island or the best water park in the Caribbean. It’s how do you create the best water park in the world?”
Among the biggest attractions is the 170-foot Tidal Tower, which houses eight of the park’s 19 water slides. These are the big ones, perfect for thrill seekers.
There’s also a wandering river, breathtaking cliff jumps and Splash Cay, a family-friendly area perfect for younger adventurers.
“Everybody in the family, there’s something for them, and the island and the water park are very much a reflection of that,” Applbaum said.
Great Tides Waterpark and the other additions at Great Stirrup Cay are part of a bigger industry trend.
Cruise companies aren’t just building beaches on their private islands anymore. They’re building destinations for their guests.
Pools, premium cabanas, gourmet food, bars, kids’ zones and adults-only escapes are all part of the experience.
Essentially, cruise lines are taking the amenities and experiences passengers expect at sea and bringing them from ship to shore.
“The cruise industry is spending billions of dollars developing, redeveloping, upgrading these islands, and it’s not just, well, we got some new chairs, maybe a new pool,” said cruise industry expert Stewart Chiron, who has been on more than 300 cruises.
But why are cruise companies making such major investments in their private islands?
According to Chiron, some traditional cruise ports simply haven’t kept up with the industry’s growth.
“You could go to some of these ports, and nothing’s changed in 20 years. They may not have the infrastructure to handle ships of this size, or they don’t have the types of facilities or attractions to handle this amount of people,” Chiron said.
And that’s what it comes down to: the people. The cruisers and what they’re asking for.
“These private island experiences rise to the very top when you ask them, why do you cruise?” Applbaum said.
Norwegian Cruise Line says guest feedback is helping drive those investments.
“We’re listening to the voice of our guests, and they just love the experience,” Applbaum said.
The other major addition at Great Stirrup Cay: a new pier that can accommodate two ships at the same time, making it easier for guests to enjoy the excitement off the ship.
