(LifeSiteNews) — An Australian woman who killed her husband using a lethal combination of drugs has received a suspended two-year sentence after pleading guilty to assisting his suicide. The court dismissed a murder charge.

Kylie Ellina Truswell-Mobbs was facing a potential life sentence after administering the deadly cocktail to her terminally ill husband who had reportedly wanted to die. Britain’s Guardian newspaper reports that the 52-year-old woman pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to assisting the suicide of her husband at the Supreme Court in Brisbane in late September.

The prosecutor accepted the guilty plea, and the court sentenced her to a suspended two years’ imprisonment after she had already spent 14 months in custody. Justice Tom Sullivan accepted that she had acted out of a sense of compassion, leading him to suspend the sentence.

Her husband, former firefighter David Ronald Mobbs, suffered from an aggressive form of motor neurone disease (MND). His body became rapidly paralyzed by the disease after being diagnosed in April 2023. He went from being fit and independent to being bedridden within months. Mobbs would have likely been eligible to request euthanasia under Queensland’s Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) law. However, the defense of Truswell-Mobbs argued that by December 5, 2023, he could no longer speak and communicate properly. Applying for VAD would take at least nine days and requires the explicit, personal, and voluntary consent of the person who wishes to die.

According to Truswell-Mobbs her husband was reportedly in severe pain, distress, and “begged to die,” after which she administered a deadly cocktail of medication through his feeding tubes, leading to his death on December 6.

Truswell-Mobbs’ defense lawyer, Ruth O’Gorman, said, “There was nothing secret about it. It was done with full knowledge of her sons and number of carers.”

Truswell-Mobbs spoke outside the court following her sentencing, where she was met by cheers and hugs from her family and supporters. “It feels good,” she told reporters.
