(LifeSiteNews) — Elon Musk weighed in on the debate around some Canadian provinces potentially becoming independent, saying that Alberta, Saskatchewan and Quebec should leave Canada.

In reply to a Polymarket X post noting how Quebec just elected the pro-separation Parti Québécois to form its government for the first time in decades, the world’s wealthiest man and tech mogul let his opinion be known.

“JUST IN: Quebec’s new premier declares his dream of Québécois independence ‘will be realized one day,’” the Polymarket X post said.

Musk replied, “Good. Quebec should separate,” then added, “They would be better off.”

“Alberta and Saskatchewan should separate too,” he wrote.

In reply to Musk, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe replied a simple “no” to the suggestion of a separate province.

Naheed Nenshi, the leader of Alberta’s leftist NDP and a former Calgary mayor, lashed out at Musk, saying, “We don’t need the opinions of any more of Trump’s allies. We already have one as Premier.”

Former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney called for Musk to give up his Canadian citizenship

“If @elonmusk still holds Canadian citizenship, the only honourable thing for him to do is to renounce it,” he wrote on X.

Other prominent Albertans were more open to the idea.

“Elon Musk has built companies others said were impossible. His conclusion about Alberta and Saskatchewan? ‘They would be better off,” attorney Keith Wilson wrote. “It is time to reject the politics of fear and recognize Alberta’s extraordinary potential. Vote Option 2.”

Over the weekend, the Parti Québécois rose to power after winning the general election. This party’s main agenda is for Quebec to separate from Canada.

While Quebec has held two previous unsuccessful referendums, there has not been one since the mid-1990s.

Alberta, on the other hand, will hold a referendum on October 19 with a separation-type question on the ballot.

The referendum vote will ask residents whether a petition for Alberta separation should proceed in the future under the current United Conservative Party (UCP) provincial government led by Premier Danielle Smith.

The question about possible separation reads: “Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?”

Option one to the question is for Alberta to remain as a part of Canada. Option 2 is for Alberta to start to process of holding a binding referendum on independence.

Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre recently urged his fellow Albertans to vote for the province to remain part of Canada and “renew their faith” in unity, arguing that leaving the country won’t solve any problems in the fight against federal overreach.

Smith has said she hopes that Albertans vote for Canadian unity.

Along with the separation question, there will be nine other issues that include immigration and Canada’s Senate.

Calls for Alberta’s independence have grown since Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney defeated Poilievre in the 2025 federal election. In Alberta, all but two seats went to the Conservatives.

Carney, like former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau before him, said he is opposed to new pipeline projects that would allow Alberta oil and gas to be extracted, although he appears to be softening his stance due to high oil prices as a result of the U.S.-Iran war.
