Kerala hotels defer UPI payment boycott until after Deepavali

The boycott, scheduled to begin on October 15, has been postponed following NPCI’s decision to defer the proposed rollout of a 0.4% MDR on select merchant transactions until after the festival.
The Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association (KHRA) has deferred its decision to stop accepting UPI payments for bills exceeding ₹2,000 until after Deepavali.
The boycott, scheduled to begin on October 15, has been postponed following the National Payments Corporation of India’s decision to defer the proposed rollout of a 0.4% merchant discount rate (MDR) on select merchant transactions until after the festival.
However, KHRA president G. Jayapal said the association’s position remained unchanged. Trade bodies are demanding the complete withdrawal of the proposed MDR charges or an increase in the threshold for levying the fee to ₹10,000.
If the proposed framework is implemented after Deepavali without changes, hospitality and retail associations plan to resume the protest, requiring customers to pay cash for bills exceeding ₹2,000.
