The best airports in the world for art, according to the “Oscars of the aviation industry”

From Denver to Mumbai, these artsy airports show that beauty can still be found in the most stressful of places

Walt Whitman was certainly not thinking of an airport when he wrote, “I know of nothing else but miracles,” but just as the poet finds wonder in everything from sharing a meal with friends to watching machinery at work, might he also have celebrated the unexpected beauty we sometimes find in the modern-day hellscape of an airport?

If a leaf of grass is no less than the journey-work of the stars, the art inside an airport that reminds us of our humanity and distracts us from our fatigue is an object worthy of praise. But until it’s taken up in verse, other forms of recognition will have to do, such as a dedicated category in Skytrax’s World Airline Awards. Industry insiders call the honours “the Oscars of the aviation industry,” and its 2026 winners for “World’s Best Art in the Airport” are sure to get the discourse flowing. AV geek or average flyer, we can all be the judge of which ones swept, got snubbed, and deserve a layover in. To reveal a little of our own hand, these also happen to be some of our favorite airports. And according to our Readers’ Choice Awards, they are some of yours, too.

With no further ado, these are the winners for “World’s Best Art in the Airport,” in ranked order.

Houston Airport

Houston Airport
1. The Houston Airport System – George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU)

For the fourth year running, first place is this Texas-based twofer. Comprised of George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU), the Houston Airport System and its arts programme are sterling examples of the old adage that everything is bigger, and evidently better, in the Lone Star State. Case in point, take IAH’s handblown glass centrepiece, Coastal Prairie Fiori, by artist Dale Chihuly. The intricate, snaking sculpture comprises 537 individual elements suspended from the rafters. Or, should you find yourself at HOU, you can’t miss David Adickes’ We Love Houston sculpture; the towering photo-op moment stands at 16.5 feet tall. In addition to the visual arts, the Houston Airports Public Art Program also includes artist residencies and their “Harmony in the Air” performances that brings in over 120 live musicians to fill the air across both airports’ terminals.

Singapore Changi Airport

Singapore Changi Airport
2. Singapore Changi Airport (SIN)

Changi is an airport that is no stranger to superlatives. Having snatched “World’s Best Airport” at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 14 times, it is literally the institution’s most awarded airport. As a massive 1.46-million-square-foot shopping complex complete with gold bar-vending machines and the iconic Jewel Rain Vortex, Changi is a destination in itself. And its stunning art program is a synecdoche for the Singaporean airport as a whole, with a major theme in the curation being the marriage of nature with technology and culture. There’s Terminal 1’s Kinetic Rain sculpture, a dancing wave of 1,216 copper-plated droplets that rises and falls with perfect synchronicity, as well as Terminal 3’s affecting Coming Home statues created by artist Han Meilin which greets visitors at the South Arrival Immigration Hall. Both pieces are part of the airport's permanent collection. While Changi invites its denizens to embrace its maximalism, there’s nothing wrong with stopping to smell the sculpted roses.

Denver International Airport

3. Denver International Airport (DEN)

Many have come to love the Denver Airport for all its weirdness, and so too has this red-headed stepchild of the airport community learned to wear its oddities with moxy. When Denver broke ground on the construction of its new airport some four decades ago, the city strung something of an albatross around its neck as the megaproject proved to be difficult to birth. Through its difficulties, inquiring minds began to wonder: Why is it so big? So expensive? What were they actually building out there? The resulting speculation – Masonic alien headquarters, New World Order safe house after releasing a global depopulation virus – became one of the most iconic conspiracy theories in Internet history. These, um, freethinkers were unintentionally encouraged by what eventually became the airport's art program. Namely, a giant blue Mustang with glowing red eyes along the entrance road, affectionately known as Blucifer, murals by Leo Tanguma depicting, among other things, a gas-masked soldier terrorising refugees with a sword, a time capsule donated by local Freemasons, and cast-iron talking gargoyles that haunt the baggage claim. The airport has leaned in, with posters over construction sites that say things like “Thanks for being patient. The lizard people keep stealing our tools.” DEN might also be the only airport in America with a sense of humour. “ We don't think of it as a problem at all because it doesn't present a problem,” says Marco Toscano, Director of Customer Experience. “It's just a fun story to have.” Adapted from Charlie Sosnick, contributing writer.

4. Vancouver International Airport (YVR)

It’s impossible to sum up the entirety of a people’s arts and culture in one space, but Vancouver International Airport’s art collection provides an impressive preview of British Columbia’s rich histories and traditions. Starting with the Musqueam Welcome Area, find a tribute to the Coast Salish Indigenous peoples. The installation is comprised of Susan Point’s Welcome Figures; her Spindle Whorl depicting the act of flight, which is also the largest in the world; and the piece Out of the Silence, a series of hand-dyed, hand-spun woollen blankets that honours the Coast Salish women’s identities as weavers. Throughout the airport, passersby take in the diverse mosaic of First Nations art represented throughout the terminals, from Haida spirituality at the “Supernatural World” installation to annals of Inuit life from the Lorne Balshine Collection. YVR takes pride in its art collection, which offers “the first and last impression of British Columbia” that many visitors will encounter. Thanks to its thoughtful curation, the collection ensures travellers are off to a strong start.

Bengaluru Kempegowda International Airport

5. Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR)

At Kempegowda International Airport, Terminal 2 houses its own art museum showcasing 103 artists and 314 artworks. Blossoming with beauty, both natural and manmade, this arm of the airport is affectionately known as the “Terminal in a Garden.” The exhibits embody Karnatakan spirit, with Naurasa – the nine aesthetic forms that comprise the foundation of classical Indian art derived from the Sanskrit text the Natya Shastra – guiding the airport’s approach to art. The collection pays homage to local materials like terracotta; incorporates biophilic design that keeps our connection to nature close; and honours ancient architectural traditions in a way that feels seamless and elegant while framing the conveniences of modern life. Say hi to Nandi, a fibreglass sculpture by artist Gopinath Subbanna, which honours the namesake sacred bull said to shepherd auspicious passages, and stop by the Museum of Art and Photography (MAP), which provides a crash course on masterpieces of Indian art throughout the ages.

Amsterdam Schiphol

Amsterdam Schiphol
6. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS)

As the crucible of the Dutch Golden Age, it’s only right that Amsterdam is home to one of the best airport art programs in the world. Even the most spartan features of the airport get a splash of creativity. Check the time at the viral video installation Real Time Schiphol Clock from artist Maarten Baas in Lounge 2. The unconventional clock is really a 12-hour looped video of Baas, silhouetted and seemingly inside the translucent clock face, manually painting the ticking by of minutes. Keep looking up as you move to Lounge 4, where you’ll find M.C. Escher’s sprawling 48-foot-long Metamorphosis mural. Should you have a layover long enough to be boredom-inducing but not quite long enough to take a jaunt out into the city, you can still visit the Rijksmuseum, which runs a free 24-hour extension at the airport. How often is it that you get to come face-to face with the 17th-century masters while waiting for Starbucks to open?

San Diego International Airport

7. San Diego International Airport (SAN)

If you ever want to behold something beautiful in San Diego, just look outside. It’s hard to beat the seaside cliffs, the gentle Pacific, and the breezy Mediterranean-esque climes “America’s Finest City” lays claim to, but the art in this airport is so convincing it might persuade you to spend another moment or two indoors. In 2025, the lauded program debuted five exhibits alongside the new Terminal 1. The new kids on the block include the 21-foot-tall jellyfish sculpture RISE that sits outside the terminal entrance, Amy Ellingson’s A Day in the Sun, which utilises hundreds of thousands of shimmering mosaic tiles to evoke sunrise and sunset, the Torrey Pines hanging sculpture by Nova Jiang, Erwin Redl’s dazzling light installation Vessel of Light that pulses along music, and the parking plaza’s Migrations sculptures by Walter Hood.

Chicago O'Hare

Chicago O'Hare
8. Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)

With 70 pieces in its permanent collection, Chicago O’Hare is far from owning the largest catalogue in this list, but each of its artworks packs a punch. Michael Hayden’s Sky’s the Limit light sculpture has become practically synonymous with the Chicago airport as the glowing tunnel that ushers its passengers from the stress of a long travel day into Windy City magic. Should you find yourself travelling with little ones, they can find their creativity reflected in Youth in the Loop, an imaginative mural painted by groups of teen apprentice artists. While not a piece of manmade art, visitors to O’Hare would be remiss to not marvel up at Ernestine, the four-story-tall fibreglass Brachiosaurus skeleton who overlooks Terminal 1, Concourse B, because you’re never too old to admire a dinosaur.

San Francisco International Airport

San Francisco International Airport
9. San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

Playing word association with the Bay Area is bound to conjure aspirational qualities, whether you think first of its tech-forward reputation or its midcentury literary past. As SFO is the gateway to NorCal's gateway city, it's only fitting that this reader-favourite airport is a microcosm of all things San Francisco. The arts program here is the product of a dream-team collaboration between the SFO Museum and the San Francisco Arts Commission, which brings in the best of local talent and courts world-class artists to the collection. In 1999, the SFO Museum earned the singular distinction of being the first airport museum to be accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), and it still remains the only airport in the world to have done so. You can find everything from video art to figurative drawing displays here, but the most accessible pieces remain the works of public art such as Charles Sowers’ interactive Butterfly Wall or Janet Echelman’s Every Beating Second, which looks as if it might take flight from where it hangs in Terminal 2.

Mumbai / CSMIA

Siddhesh Savant
10. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Mumbai (BOM)

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport takes the cake for the airport art program with the largest collection on this list. The airport’s museum, the Artbeat of New India, has over 7,000 artefacts and artworks in its collection, and it’s no exaggeration to say you could spend all day perusing them. The program takes advantage of the opportunity to showcase its expansive bounty, with inventive displays of the many ways these artefacts traverse the borders of time and space. There are Thresholds of India, which showcases 6,000 historical artefacts like Nagaland wooden totems, Kerala masks, and Gujarati architectural motifs, to name just a few. As you come and go, you’ll see Layered Narratives, a series of 29 murals illustrating Mumbai’s evolution as a metropolis. Even as you rush through the halls to make your hotel check-in, you’ll be compelled to stop and take in Baggage Acclaimed, a testament to the country’s varied craftsmen and textile traditions.
