"One hour can be the difference between destruction and no destruction."

Supratik Mukhopadhyay, a Louisiana State University professor and lead scientist behind DeepFire, an AI wildfire detection system that won special recognition and $100,000 from the XPRIZE Wildfire competition. DeepFire draws on satellites, smoke sensors and monitoring cameras to predict wildfires up to 35 days in advance. It is 90 percent accurate in the four-to-seven-day window. In Australia's New South Wales, the system detected wildfires before the state's own fire and rescue service in most test cases. Louisiana recorded 600 fires in August 2023 alone, nearly as many as the state's entire annual average the prior decade. The risk of extreme wildfire worldwide doubled over the two decades beginning in 2003, according to NASA. (The Times-Picayune)
