Hannaford’s website and mobile app remained offline Friday, more than three days after the supermarket’s parent company says it disabled some systems as a precautionary measure while addressing a network cybersecurity issue.

Ahold Delhaize, the Dutch food giant that owns Maine’s largest grocer, announced in a brief news release late Monday that it was experiencing an internal network issue and had taken some systems offline to protect them, including the Hannaford website and app.

Online ordering has been disabled since then, though stores have remained open as usual.

On Thursday morning, the notification of the outage on Hannaford’s website was updated to include a note that customers can still shop online via third-party delivery services such as DoorDash, Instacart and Uber Eats.

Caitlin Cortelyou, a spokesperson for the Scarborough-based grocery store chain, said in an email Thursday that Hannaford is continuing to work with Ahold Delhaize to resolve the issue. While the investigation into the outage is ongoing, Cortelyou said, the companies “have no evidence at this moment that customer or associate data was taken in this cybersecurity incident.”

Ahold Delhaize says it has contacted external cybersecurity experts to help with its response and is “engaging with the appropriate authorities” as necessary.

“We know how important it is for our customers to be able to shop with us when and how they choose, and we apologize for the disruption,” Cortelyou said. “We appreciate our customers’ continued patience and understanding as we work to resolve the issue.”

If the cybersecurity issue is deemed to have been a data breach, then Maine law requires it be reported to the Office of the Maine Attorney General. The AG’s office said neither Hannaford nor Ahold Delhaize had reported the issue as of Wednesday.

A 2024 breach of Ahold Delhaize’s systems affected more than 95,000 Mainers and over 2 million people worldwide. Hannaford said most of the Mainers whose information was exposed were current or former employees.

Ahold Delhaize, one of the world’s largest food retailers, operates more than 2,000 U.S. stores under several brands, including Stop & Shop, Food Lion and Giant Food. Hannaford is the state’s largest grocer, with almost 70 stores across Maine.

Editor’s note: This story was updated on Oct. 16 to indicate that the outage has continued into Friday.
