I’ve been testing this on a couple of content sites since early this year. The honest answer: the boring fundamentals win.
What actually moved the needle for getting cited:
- A 40-60 word direct answer right under each H2, before the deep dive. AI tools love lifting these verbatim.
- Comparison tables. Perplexity especially seems to grab structured comparisons.
- Original data or quotes. Anything that can’t be found on ten other sites.
What did nothing: llms.txt (no measurable effect so far), and “conversational tone” rewrites. Also, schema helps but it’s not magic — I added FAQ schema to 30 posts and saw zero change in AI citations, though it didn’t hurt.
One caveat: this is all moving fast. What works today might be table stakes in six months. But right now, “write clearly, answer directly, add something original” is the whole playbook.
