Electronic Arts has officially announced the permanent closure of BioWare, bringing an end to more than three decades of game development. Alongside the shutdown of the legendary Canadian studio, it has also been confirmed that the next mainline entry in the Mass Effect series has been cancelled rather than handed over to another internal development team.

Founded in 1995 and later acquired by Electronic Arts in 2008, BioWare built an enviable reputation as a powerhouse of western RPG design. Over the decades, the team delivered genre-defining classics including Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and the original Mass Effect and Dragon Age trilogies. However, the studio struggled to maintain that momentum in recent years following the commercial failure of Anthem and a lukewarm reception to its final release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, in 2024. Which is fair, the last games did suck pretty bad, but it’s still sad to see such an iconic name be put to rest.

In a formal farewell message published on October 21, the studio confirmed the news directly to its community: “Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.”

The confirmation that the next Mass Effect was still only in early development comes as a surprise to many followers of the franchise, given that the project was originally announced back in November 2020. Furthermore, executive producer Mike Gamble had reassured fans as recently as November 2025 that the studio was entirely focused on the game following an earlier round of staff reductions.

According to reports from Bloomberg, the closure forms part of a wider restructuring effort across Electronic Arts that will see approximately 400 employees lose their jobs, representing around three percent of the publisher’s global workforce. Because BioWare had already been heavily downsized in 2025, roughly 50 remaining staff members at the studio are affected by this final shutdown. These sweeping cuts arrive shortly after EA transitioned into private ownership in August 2026 via a 55 billion dollar acquisition backed by investors including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

Basically, either find a way to sell more FIFA coins and please investors or you get shown the door. God I really hate EA.
