My family has known Esther Helton for over twenty years, long before she ever ran for political office, and she is the same person now that she was then. Her life, either as a nurse or elected official has been about one thing, helping people.

One example of her caring, that she accomplished this past session, after a two-year battle in Nashville, is getting a drug that can kill, indiscriminately, is now classified illegal in Tennessee. The drug is called Kratom. Some have also referred to it as gas station heroine.

Just a few weeks ago, it was reported that two Ole Miss students died from using the drug. It has also been linked to accidental deaths here in the Chattanooga area.

Esther was presented this issue by a local, grieving mother who lost her son to this easily accessible drug, sitting on gas station counters, and took action. That shows the kind of elected official Esther is. That also reflects the kind of respect she has from her colleagues in Nashville.

District 30 comprises of East Lake, East Ridge, Brainerd, East Brainerd, Apison and parts of Collegedale, making it one of the most diverse legislative districts in Tennessee.

Esther works tirelessly for all of her district and has proven, she is not afraid to take on the tough issues. As the former State Representative for District 30, I know how hard she works, and how important it is to have someone in this roll that gets things done.
