Black History Month happens every October. Keep reading to find out a bit more about it and how you can learn more.

Black History Month is a time to recognise and celebrate the history, achievements and contributions of Black people around the world. In the UK, it takes place every October, offering an opportunity to reflect on racism, discrimination and inequality while recognising those who have challenged injustice.

Black history is an important part of our shared history. Learning about influential figures such as Mary Seacole, a Jamaican-born nurse whose courage and compassion saved lives during the Crimean War; Rosa Parks, whose refusal to give up her seat on a segregated bus helped spark a movement for equality; and Olaudah Equiano, a writer whose powerful voice helped change public attitudes and inspire social reform, alongside figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Maya Angelou, reminds us of the importance of equality, representation and inclusion. Yet many Black voices and achievements have historically been overlooked.

To mark Black History Month, CUSU’s Global Majority Community invited students to a screening of The Help (2011), followed by a conversation about race, allyship and social change. If you missed the screening, you can watch the film on ITVX.

Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, The Help follows Aibileen and Minny, two Black domestic workers, and Skeeter, a young white woman who seeks to document their experiences. Against a backdrop of racial segregation and discrimination, their stories explore the courage it takes to challenge injustice and speak out.

While The Help offers a perspective on racism and inequality, it also raises important questions about representation and whose voices are heard. The screening provides an opportunity to reflect on the experiences of Black women, the importance of listening to marginalised communities, and how meaningful allyship can contribute to social change.
