Fort Worth residents have until Wednesday, July 15, to weigh in on proposed data center regulations before the City Council considers revised rules and whether to begin the legal process for a temporary moratorium on new development
City staff will present updated recommendations during an Aug. 4 work session before the City Council considers an ordinance on Aug. 11 that would begin the state-required legal process for a temporary moratorium on new data center development. If approved, the action would start a public hearing process, with a final council vote on a moratorium not expected until December.
According to the city, an Aug. 11 vote would not immediately create a moratorium. Instead, it would begin the legal process required under Texas law, including public hearings, before the council could take final action as early as December
The updated timeline follows last week’s 7-4 vote by the Fort Worth Zoning Commission recommending denial of the current ordinance. Commissioners generally supported stronger regulations but said they wanted additional time to review the proposal and consider public feedback.
City staff are also expected to present revisions to the proposed regulations, which address issues such as land use, neighborhood compatibility, water use, noise and economic development incentives for data centers.
If the City Council votes Aug. 11 to begin the moratorium process, state law requires a public hearing process before a final vote could occur. The city says the earliest council action on a moratorium would come in December.
