New Training Methods of the UAH Space Hardware Club Nathanial Long University of Alabama in Huntsville Freshman, Aerospace Engineering AIAA Region II Student Conference, 2014 1 The Space Hardware Club • Student run design, build, and fly club • ChargerSat Program flagship project • ChargerSat 1 to orbit November 2013 • ChargerSat 2 microgravity flight February 2015 2 Design Competitions • CanSat-Simulates a mock atmospheric sensor payload • Mars Rover- Rocket and rover design, both must meet specific capabilities 3 BalloonSat • Used as a science, testing, and outreach platform • Vehicle for One Month Projects • Total payload mass of less than 12 lbs • Payloads attached on a single line under the balloon 4 Overview of One Month • Introduced Fall 2013 • Simple balloon payload to be completed in one month • Teams of 2-3 new members with 1 senior club member • Teach basic concepts of design and fabrication of major subsystems 5 Technical Requirements • Weight < 0.5 lb • Self-contained power system • Cut down at 1000 ft • Visible indicators • Descent rate < 15ft/s • Use an XMEGA microcontroller 6 Why is One Month Needed • Advanced projects and designs require a high degree of knowledge • We want younger students to contribute • Lack of a project to teach basic skills 7 STUDENT BENEFITS 8 Mentoring • New members paired with an older, experienced member • Contact for club information, schoolwork, and technical help • Club is great for professional networking 9 System Level Design Perspective • All subsystems must be considered together • Mechanical design must accommodate electronics, etc • Many new students do not have this mentality 10 Class Relevancy • One Month Project allows for application of classroom topics • Examples include, CAD, aerodynamic principles, coding, and fabrication • Aids in retention of material 11 Technical Skills • Circuit Fabrication • Soldering • Coding/Software Design • CAD • Presentation Experience 12 CLUB BENEFITS 13 Design Team Development • Natural leaders emerge from the One Month Project • Members find focus areas • Begin with design experience and technical skills • Design work begins immediately without taking time to teach basic skills 14 Commitment • Participating in the club takes up a lot of time • One Month allows those who aren’t as committed to step back • Design teams do not lose members due to lack of commitment 15 Other Benefits • Ballooning experience • Begin grooming new members for leadership positions • High visibility project • Teaching experience for mentors 16 CONCLUSIONS 17 Technical Results • All but one payload were delivered to the flight line • 2 worked successfully and were recovered • Mass requirement and coding were the biggest challenges 18 Areas to Improve • Better timeline of trainings and deadlines • Plans to deal with teams that lose members • Assessing availability and technical skills of mentors 19 Final Thoughts • One Month needs to be used as a recruiting tool • Mentors need to be selected and trained before September • One Month has had a very positive impact on this year’s CanSat teams 20 Acknowledgements • Dr. Brian Landrum, UAH MAE Department • Dr. Francis Wessling, UAH MAE Department and Space Hardware Club Advisor • Markus Murdy and John Alcorn, Space Hardware Club members 21
