Uranus: at Mag +5.8 in Pisces sets around 3am Neptune: at Mag +7.9 in Aquarius sets at 11.30pm Constellation of the Month Cepheus—King of Ethiopia A faint northern constellation, found between Cassiopeia, Deneb and Polaris. α and  Cassiopiae point to its brightest star Alderamin, α Cephei. In Greek mythology Cepheus and Cassiopeia were the parents of Andromeda, immortalised in the legend involving Perseus, Pegasus and the sea monster Cetus, a story much mangled in some films! Image Credit: Torsten Bronger Notable stars:  Cephei – Triple star. Variable blue giant, prototype of its class has a very close (0.25”) companion. Also a mag 8 star 13” away. Beta Cephei variables have a small magnitude ranges and short periods.  Cephei – The star after which the class of pulsating variable stars used to first measure the distance of galaxies was named. Known as “standard candles”. Also a fine double star easily split in binoculars. Yellow and blue, separation 40”.  Cephei – Named “The Garnet Star” by Herschel, a variable supergiant and one of the reddest stars in the sky. VV Cephei – Supergiant eclipsing variable. Period 20.4yr, next eclipse starts in 2017, mid-eclipse in April 2018. Some Interesting Objects: NGC 188 (C1) : Open cluster NGC 6946 (C12) : Spiral, the “Fireworks Galaxy” NGC 7023 (C4) : The “Iris Nebula” NGC 40 (C2) : Faint planetary, the “Bowtie Nebula” NGC 7380 : Cluster + the “Wizard Nebula” IC1396 : Large area of nebulosity including the “Elephant’s Trunk” There are no Messier objects in Cepheus. Lunar Feature of the month Smirnov Dorsa When it comes to lunar observation one of the great intrigues is closely following the bends and kinks from the numerous Dorsa and Rimae that litter the lunar surface. Dorsa Smirnov is a wrinkle ridge system, a feature connected to tectonic activity when lava started to cool down and contract. Smirnov runs for 156 kms and can be found in the Mare Serenitatis and is easily located. Photo by NASA The Sun in November There has been a little more activity of late on the Sun. The average sunspot number since the equinox is 66. Most spots have been quiet but spots 1861 and 1865, imaged on October 12, have magnetic fields which harbour the energy for X class flares. X class flares are the most energetic category and potentially can produce good auroral displays at northern latitudes On September 23, in Norway, compass needles swung 1 o away from normal when a local geomagnetic storm occurred over the northern part of the country. Rob Stammes recorded it at the Polarlightcenter in Lofoten. Strong auroras were also seen. The display might be related to the approach of a solar wind stream emanating from a coronal hole which opened up on September 21. The wind was predicted to reach Earth on September 23/24. It can be found in the centre of the Winter Triangle of Betelgeuse, Procyon and Sirius. Monoceros is a relatively modern constellation. Its first certain appearance was on a globe created by the Dutch cartographer Petrus Plancius in 1612. Notable stars:  Monocerotis – Beautiful triple star mags 4.7, 5.2 and 6.1  Mon – A lovely double mags 4.4 and 6.6, separation 12” V838 – Variable star that suddenly increased its brightness by a factor of 10,000 on 6th Jan 3002. NGC 2264 The Christmas tree cluster, Cone nebula, Foxfur nebula region. NGC 2261 C46. Hubble’s variable nebula, mag 9-10. Changes due to movement of dust clouds. NGC 2238 The rosette nebula region, including the cluster NGC 2244 (C50). The Milky Way goes through Monoceros and the region contains many interesting dust and gas clouds, nebulae and star clusters. Lunar Feature of the Month Maurolycus The southern highland region of the moon can be a confusing tangle of thousands of craters, big and small, but one particular crater than stands out in this area, for me at least and excluding Clavius, is the crater Maurolycus. When you observe this crater its quite apparent that Maurolycus is overlapped by other ancient craters which makes for a observing delight. The crater itself is approximately 4.7 km deep and has high terraced walls which make for fascinating viewing during sunrise and sunset over the crater. Maurolycus, just below centre, by David Scanlan, FRAS The Sun in February The Sun has shown continuing activity during February, particularly in the southern hemisphere, leading to the prospect of an approaching maximum. Of special interest this month is sunspot 1944, shown here on January 7, when it produced an earth-bound X class flare. It then went behind the western limb, only to return again on January 28, when it was re-designated AR1967. It disappeared again around the western limb on February13. On February 24, most solar activity was coming from a location hidden behind the Sun's south-eastern limb (circled area). It is likely that this is sunspot AR1967, returning from a two-week transit across the far side of the Sun. The place to watch is circled. If this is AR1967, it will mark the third time the active region has crossed the visible face of the sun. Sunspots seldom last more than two or three weeks; two or three months is remarkable. By now the returning spot is unlikely to be as powerful as previous passes. However, flares and CMEs appearing over the southeastern limb hint at some remaining potency.
