Миссия по запуску марсианского планетохода. Марсоход предназначен для астробиологических исследований древней среды на Марсе, поверхности планеты, геологических процессов и истории, в том числе оценки прошлой обитаемости планеты и поиска доказательств жизни в пределах доступных геологических материалов.Конструктивно аппарат основан на технологических достижениях предыдущего марсохода Curiosity.

Полезная нагрузка марсохода: 

  • Mastcam-Z — расширенная камерная система с панорамным и стереоскопическим отображением и функцией зума. Прибор также будет определять минералогический состав марсианской почвы и выполнять вспомогательные операции.
  • SuperCam — инструмент для анализа химического и минералогического состава марсианской почвы. Прибор также сможет обнаружить на расстоянии присутствие органических соединений в горных породах и реголите.
  • Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry (PIXL) — рентгеновский флуориметрический спектрометр, который также будет содержать тепловизор с высоким разрешением, чтобы определить состав марсианской почвы по редким элементам. PIXL позволяет более точно обнаружить и проанализировать элементный состав, чем было возможно раньше.
  • Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman & Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals (SHERLOC) — ультрафиолетовый рамановский спектрометр, который будет обеспечивать мелкомасштабные изображения, чтобы определить мелкомасштабную минералогию и обнаружить органические вещества. SHERLOC будет первым ультрафиолетовым спектрометром на поверхности Марса и будет взаимодействовать с другими инструментами в полезной нагрузке.
  • Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment (MOXIE) — экспериментальный инструмент, который будет производить кислород из атмосферы Марса, состоящей из углекислого газа.

12014-10-27. Aerojet Rocketdyne построит ускорители для системы посадки марсохода и установит источник ядерной энергии на аппарат в рамках двух контрактов общей стоимостью 14.5 миллионов долларов. Аппаратные средства, которые поставит Aerojet Rocketdyne, будут являться аналогами установленных на марсоходе Curiosity. 22015-02-25. НАСА планирует в 2022 году запуск нового спутника ретрансляции.
NASA планирует запустить новый телекоммуникационный спутник на орбиту Марса с 2022 году для обеспечения работы марсохода Mars 2020. Этот аппарат будет использовать ряд инновационных разработок, а именно: высокопроизводительные ЭРДУ которые будут работать от солнечных батарей и/или оптическую коммуникационную полезную нагрузку которая должна позволить передавать данные с повышенной скоростью.
Необходимость пуска нового аппарата обусловлена тем, что, используемый в настоящее время в качестве ретранслятора аппарат Mars Odyssey находится на орбите уже более 13 лет и срок его активного существования подходит к концу. В случае, если до запуска нового космического аппарата,на ретрансляторе произойдет отказ, то НАСА планирует задействовать для передачи данных космический аппарат MAVEN. Вероятность данного события достаточно высока поскольку в 2012 году на связном аппарате уже отказывал маховик.

Компания Cobham получила два контракта в размере $20.5 млн. на производство приводов для миссии Mars 2020. Данная поставка не будет являться первой поскольку и ранее космическое агентство США выбирала продукцию компании для своих марсоходов. НАСА опубликовало информацию о том, что ее будущий проект посылки марсхода обойдется в 2.1 млрд. долл. 2. Более подробно изучить ветер и пылевые бури планеты.
3. Записать звуковую сигнатуру, которая соответствует движению и работе марсохода.

Космическое агентство США заключило новый контракт с ULA на запуск марсохода Mars-2020. Средством выведения выбрана, как и в случае Curiosity, РН Atlas 5 541. Размер контракта составляет 243 млн. долл., что больше чем 195 млн. долл., заплаченных в 2006 году. Согласно обнародованному офисом отчету следует, что:
1. Основные технологические риски проекта связаны с системой сбора образцов. При этом, OIG отметил, что агентство так и не имеет в своем распоряжении демонстрационный образец изделия.
2. Стоимость миссии ориентировочно равна 2.4 млрд. долл. (первоначально планировалось от $1.3 до $1.7 млрд.)
3. Пять из семи ключевых технологий проекта имеют уровень TRL ниже рекомендованного шестого уровня (три из них относятся к системе сбора образцов).

92017-05-22. GAO обнародовало данные о состоянии работ по проекту Mars 2020.
Согласно обнародованному отчету:
1. Проект Mars 2020 это часть марсианской исследовательской программы НАСА, которая нацелена на получения ответа на вопрос о том, была ли (существует) на Марсе жизнь. Разрабатываемый в ходе выполнения проекта марсоход должен будет исследовать поверхность Марса, проводить геологические исследования и готовить образцы для последующего возвращения на Землю. Также на марсоходе будет установлена демонстрационная аппаратура, которая будет преобразовывать диоксид углерода в кислород. Технически КА Mars 2020 будет наследовать свои характеристики от КА Curiosity (посадка на Марс произошла в 2012 году). Планирование разработки аппарата не сопровождалось использованием мероприятий по снижению рисков, однако агентство решило выделить на него дополнительные резервы, что должно будет в перспективе позволить нивелировать проблемы создания КА. В целом же ряд технологий, которые нужны для создания марсохода, находятся на более низком уровне зрелости, чем это требуется нормативными документами агентства. При этом, GAO отметило, что прибор для определения наличия в пробах органической жизни может быть не готов к требуемому сроку. Также к рискам создания аппарата аудиторы отнесли увеличение его массы (ранее аппарат уже потяжелел с 980 до 1050 кг). В дополнение к этому, отдельное беспокойство вызвало состояние разработки парашютной системы (в процессе отработки два испытания закончились неудачей), которая должны быть более мощной чем у MSL, а следовательно, будет нуждаться в дополнительной отработке.
2. К основным причинам некоторого увеличения стоимости проекта в GAO отнесли изменения в составе и структуре научных инструментов марсхода, которые стали, в частности, включать в свой состав инструменты для выработки кислорода из диоксида углерода и демонстратор вертолета (дрон должен будет помогать в планировании миссии). В отчете также отмечено, что к февралю 2017 года у разработчиков была готова документация на 80 процентов систем марсохода, однако наилучшим результатом было бы достижение показателя в более чем 90 процентов.
1. По состоянию на начало 2017 года стоимость проекта составляла $ 2443.5 млн., в том числе:
- проработка проекта $392.9 млн.;
- разработка $1674.7 млн.;
