Космический аппарат предназначенный для испытания спутниковой платформы общего на-значения массой не более 91 кг.

Проводимые на аппарате эксперименты:

  • ICSat (Internet Communications Satellite) - демонстрация передачи файлов между наземной станцией и МКА со скоростью 1 Мбит/с с использованием IP-протоколов. Аппаратура изготовлена из коммерческих компонентов и включает в себя связной блок массой 3 кг (передатчик, приемник, модем) и четыре усилителя;
  • CFTP (Configurable Fault Tolerant
    Processor) – испытания в полете одноплатного трехканального реконфигурируемого процессора с обнаружением и коррекцией единичных ошибок на мажоритарной логике;
  • Микродозиметр MiDN – цифровой твердотельный прибор для измерения спектра ионизирующего излучения с особым вниманием к вторичным нейтронам. Два датчика находятся внутри МКА (один из них с полиэтиленовым поглотителем), третий - снаружи на верхней панели;
  • Eclipse – с целью испытания в космосе электрохромных мембран – пластических материалов, оптические свойства которых изменяются под действием электрических сигналов;
  • NCSU (Nano Chem Sensor Unit) – эксперимент с целью испытания химического датчика на основе нанотехнологий.

Data obtained can be used to determine in real time the dose equivalent and effective dose from which the radiation risk and regulatory limits can be assessed. The objectives of this research project are to develop a rugged, portable, low power, low mass, solid-state microdosimeter suitable for spaceflight and verify its performance through radiation source and beam tests. MAJOR ACTIVITIES The primary focus this past year has been the design, fabrication, integration, test, and delivery of the MIDNMidSTAR instrument to the MidSTAR spacecraft [1,2]. Delivery was made in May 2006 to the Academy built spacecraft scheduled for launch in January 2007. While rudimentary, this instrument should provide information on the performance of the microdosimeter in space. During its development we were able to identify significant improvements to the design that was frozen two years ago. We were selected by the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory at Brookhaven National Laboratory for two sequences of radiation beam tests for a total of 56 hours in the Spring and Summer of 2006. Reduction of this data is underway utilizing the Geant-4 and MCNPX radiation transport codes. We are an official beta test site for the MCNPX code. There has been one publication in a peer reviewed journal and 5 presentations at peer reviewed symposia this past year. We carried out a vibration test of the MIDN-MidSTAR instrument in April 2006. Subsequent to this, the spacecraft underwent a vibration test and a thermal bakeout. The instrument contains an electronic pulser that by command from the control station can test the electrical circuits independent of the sensor. Data obtained after each test indicated that the instrument was performing as expected. The MIDN-MidSTAR instrument is shown in Figure 1 on a horizontal vibration table at the Naval Research Laboratory. Figure 2 illustrate the placement of the three sensors in the spacecraft. Pisacane PLANS FOR THE NEXT 12 MONTHS Our plan for next year is to: (1) support our experiment on site during launch of the spacecraft; (2) monitor performance and interact with the control station, (3) acquire/reduce the microdosimeter observations; (4) carry out radiation beam tests at Brookhaven National Laboratory; (5) reconcile the radiation beam tests with computer simulations; (6) continue development of the state-of-the-art of solid-state microdosimetry through development of advanced electronics for our bench-top system for use in the radiation beam tests; (7) develop a sensor for the ParkinsonSat spacecraft to be launched in 2009, and (8) continue our educational and publication activities.
