PRESS RELEASE Sentinel 2B: Belgian know-how soon in orbit to protect and serve the people On March 7th, the Sentinel 2B satellite will be launched from Kourou, French Guiana, to be placed on the same orbit as its twin brother, Sentinel 2A, launched back in June 2015. Sentinel 2B will supply images of land surfaces for the benefit of the European environment surveillance program, Copernicus. It will carry a set of optical instruments dedicated to Earth observation. Among them, a multispectral camera (MSI) capable of recording Earth's landscape changes in a dozen different colors. Sentinel 2B will be placed on the same orbit as Sentinel 2A, but separated by 180°. Every five days, the satellites will jointly cover all land surfaces in order to gather precious data which will be made available for free to users worldwide to improve agricultural practices, to monitor the environment and to mitigate the effects of natural disasters. AMOS, located in the Liège Science Park, in Belgium, is a key supplier for this type of space missions. The company provided the 3 mirrors of the MSI instrument telescope on board the Sentinel 2A and 2B satellites. AMOS realized the polishing and the shaping of the silicon carbide blanks supplied by AIRBUS Defense & Space and aligned the telescope. The dichroïc blades, which allow the separation of the visible and infrared channels of the instrument, have also been manufactured by AMOS. As Philippe Gilson, AMOS CEO, points out: « AMOS, a high-tech Walloon SME, has become a privileged and reliable partner of Airbus Defense & Space for space optics. Mission Status Report 21 Reference Period: 23-29 Jan 2016 Mission status On-line Access to the routine production of Sentinel-2A ortho-rectified Level-1C products is accessible via https://scihub.copernicus.eu allowing on-line retrieval via Internet of the products acquired from 28 November 2015 onward. To date, over 9500 Level-1C products are available for download, cumulating a total volume of 46 TB. Overall, more than 70.000 products equivalent to 320 TB have been downloaded by the user communities. After the failure within the Data Centre hosting the Sentinel Data Hubs causing an interruption of the data dissemination on Friday 22 January, the access to the SciHub services has been restored on Saturday 23 January at 10:00 UTC, products publication was gradually restored on all Data Hubs on Monday 25 January. More information at https://scihub.copernicus.eu (see the News section). Operations have run smoothly since then in the reporting period. The current nominal ramp-up scenario has been executed: with an average of 10 minutes MSI sensing time per orbit, Sentinel-2A is acquiring Europe and Africa systematic, while the rest of the world land masses defined in the MRD are mapped with a 30 days revisit time. The Flight Operations Segment (FOS) ensuring the monitoring, control and commanding of the satellite is operating nominally. The team is currently completing the Commissioning of the Optical Communication Payload. EDRS-A has been launched successfully into orbit on 29 January 2016, see http://www.esa.int/spaceinvideos/Videos/2016/01/EDRS-A_launch_highlights X-band data acquisitions are routinely performed over Matera, Maspalomas and Svalbard core stations. The acquired data are circulated within the PDGS, systematically processed to Level-0 and Level-1 products and archived. Operations are routinely performed with nominal performance at the Processing and Archiving Centres and other PDGS operational services (i.e. Mission Performance Centre, Precise Orbit Determination, Wide Area Network). The contribution of Sentinel-2 products to complete the Copernicus optical European coverages (HR_IMAGE_2015) is under analysis with the European Environmental Agency (EEA). For the Copernicus Marine Monitoring Service (CMEMS) 2 Antarctica regions are part of the nominal acquisition plan during the Southern Hemisphere Winter.
